As part of our formal study, we will be asking all participants to attend an
orientation, 8 group sessions and 2 follow up sessions. The group sessions will be
once a week and each session will last about 1 ½ to 2 hours. The first follow up
session will be 6 months after the last group session and the second follow up will
be 6 months after that. Participants will also fill out surveys about social
activities, school, living arrangements, behaviors, relationships, and depression.
Transportation and childcare will be provided if needed. Food will be served at
each meeting.
Maikurus must be at older than the young mom they partner and must have Act 33/34
clearance (we will pay the application fee).
Young moms must be under age 18 at the start of the study, have no more than one
child, and be partnered with a Maikuru.

Young Moms: Together We Can Make a Difference.
A research study being conducted by the Department of Family Medicine of the
University of Pittsburgh
The purpose of this research study is to help young women who have already had a
baby to put off having another baby until they are a little bit older and maybe more
ready to be a mom. We want to celebrate what the young mom has done in her life and
help her use her strengths to make good choices for her future. Specifically, we
want to invite young moms and an older, female support person (a Maikuru) to join a
group with other young moms and their Maikurus. Each group will have a theme and
there will be some teaching, some activities, some discussion and some fun and
celebration! Each participant will get a total of $120 dollars in gift cards if
they complete all of the requirements of the study.
