thumb sucking
I'm trying to break my 20-month-old daughter of her thumb sucking habit. She discarded her binkie when she was about 3 months old and has pacified herself with her thumb ever since. I'm concerned about it because 1. of her teeth and 2. I think she would talk more if her thumb wasn't always in her mouth. Any suggestions or help of how you "broke" your child of this habit will be greatly appreciated! :)

I had the same concerns about my son's thumb sucking. I asked his doctor at his 2 year check up and she said that the problems with the teeth aren't a big concern unless they are still sucking their thumbs by the age of about 4 or 5. It is a way to self soothe and is not usually a problem. I would just ask her to take her thumb out when you are trying to communicate with her. Tell her you can't hear her with it there.

Other than that, I wouldn't worry too much at this age. When I start trying to get my son to stop, I think I will start with trying to get him to do it only at bedtime and nap.
