My 12 week old son has developed a pretty consistant bedtime routine and sleep pattern thanks to all that responded to my last post. We do bath time, breast feeding then story time, we have also started swaddling him which allows him to sleep a little longer.
Now for the new delima; I am breast feeding however I work nights therefore pump aswell so he get bottles. I usually can pump 2.5 oz per breast when at work. Question. My son will eat a 4-5 oz bottle when my husband feeds him in the middle of the night, however when I am home at night and breast feed him he usually only eats on one side then falls asleep. My husband thinks we should strictly bottle feed him at night so he will get more. I explained that I actually enjoy breast feeding and he is fine with me continuing to do so. I am just curious if anyone else has this delima, and what has worked for you? |

Hi Mags, I noticed the same thing with my 10 week old son. I started to feed him one breast and right before he fell asleep, I would change his diaper then give him the other breast. I wouldn't do it at every feeding, but at least once. I try not to get too carried away by how many ounces he gets. He is definitely gaining weight.
Now, I need to find your post about sleep patterns :) |

I think that breastfeeding at night should only be used to get him to go back to sleep... especially if he's on the right track of gaining weight. :) |

If he is falling sleep after just one breast, he might just use it as comfort and not much for the feeding. I have an expierence with this. DD used the breast for sleeping, barely sucking at night. during the day she would drink a lot but at night just enought to sleep. So I think you should try first to use the bottle. If he drinks a lot from it, so he needs the milk at night, but if he refuses and gets your breast and then he sleeps inmediately, he might be ready to give up the night feeding. Since you work I would recomend you give up the breast at night, then it is a battle to try to wean them off it. I breastfed until she was 18 months, and got 2 onz barely from both breast. I notice she would have just alittle bit each time and almost two sucks at night and felt sleep, She was so ready to wean, and only gave problem the first night and then she would sleep all night. However you keep pumping and giving him your breastmilk as much as you can. |

I misread your post I thought he was 12 months old. At 12 wks old baby needs the milk every 3-4 hrs. But I do recommend you feed him from the bottle at night, even your husband can help you do it. Also try to breastfeed him during the day and if you can't do it, try on weekends. Even if you pump, the amount of milk from the pump is not enough as if he sucks it directly from your breast. It also tends the breast to dry just from pumping. So if you try on weekend you milk supply will keep flowing. After my DD turned 2 month old I just breastfeed her without using the pump. My milk supply went up from 2 onz each breast to 6-8 onz per breast(until she turned 1 yr old). |

I know that from my breast feeding experience the child is able to get more out then the pump is. While my son would breastfeed he would eat one breast and then be done but when I would pump I needed the milk from both breast to feed him. He is a really big baby and eats a lot. When he went to daycare he prefered the bottle and refused the breast. I kept pumping until I wasn't getting enough for him. So if I rambled your baby is getting enough from your one breast for him if he weren't your baby would wake up soon agian to feed. Hope it helped. |

I would recommend continuing feeding him at night, when you are there. The stimulation of the baby nursing is what causes your supply to remain at the lvl that he needs. If you are only pumping at night, gradually your body will stop providing milk at night and then you would end up having to put him on formula. With my son, I worked from the time he was 6 weeks until he was 12 weeks. During that time, I would pump while at work. I would get around 6-8 oz between both breast each time(I pumped twice per day). Also, sometimes at night, in order for me to get a break, DH would feed him a bottle. However, I would wake up at the same time and pump. It would take me 10 minutes to pump but it took him around 20 to eat, so I was able to get back to sleep faster. We did this usually once a week. Utimately, it is up to you to decide if you want to continue nursing at night, but don't let your DH tell you not to. It's your body and your decision. If your son if falling sleep after one breast, but he is still gaining weight, then he is able to get all that needs needs from the one side. Just make sure to give him the other side the next time. Hope this helps and you are able to come to a solution that works for all of you. |
