I have a 10 and 1/2 month old and she just atarted teething. Whe was born with two bottom teeth and had a third come in about two weeks ago and did not even notice. Now she has two coming in on the top in the front and has been crabby for two days. I use those homeopathic teething tabs and I have tried some ice in one fo those feeding things that look like a lolly pop. Also, I tried cooling her teethers in the fridge but she won't shew on them. I am at my wits end. She has been a very happy baby and never been this fussy since day one. Does anyone have any helpful suggestions or hints of what I could do to fix this problem? The other question is does the oral gel really make it harder for them to teeth? |

Heidi my girls are 12 months old
I have given them a popsicle (I hold it with most of it wrapped in a papertowel so I can handle it with out getting it all over) we also give them Tylenol every night before bed (for us night time seems to be the hardest)
the topical stuff is good but just sort term ... I use it for waiting for the tylenol to take effect
also my girls LOVE chewing and sucking on face clothes (rougher the better) dampen a corner and put in the fridge for a few minutes, that is great too
I swear I have nearly tried everything ... with 2 babies who each have their own comfort levels ... you will find the right thing that works for your daughter and YOU
GOOD LUCK Colleen |

I second the cold washcloth, my son seems to like biting on that best! I also use tylenol when he seems more fussy and uncomfortable than usual. Good luck |

Yeah I agree we gave my son tylonal also and we also would put a few ice cubes in a wash cloth tie the end up and wet it. He loved that but hated all teething rings and to this day wont use them. I also use the little rubber tooth and gum cleaner for babies I put it on my finger and he chews away and it makes him happy. I had no luck with the orejel or anything because they wear off so quickly that it was a waste of money. |

Hi Heidi The homeopathic teething tabs worked well for me if she had some discomfort and I gave them to her per the instructions on the bottle. I also gave her tylenol when it was really bad where she was very fussy and drooling alot. I'm not one to give meds I like to give natural remedies but tylenol worked good especially at night time it would be good for 4 hrs.
I also froze tiny bagels and gave them to her (of course she was already eating solids) but watch her though. She is now getting her 1st molers so they so those are worse so I've been using teething tabs and she's been fine. The cold teethers I used to when she was between 7-10 months.
In my personal opinion I would not use oral gel. My pediatrician told me there is something in it that could cause something to happen to their heart. I don't remember. Ask your pediatrician and see what he recommends. Educate yourself. I have these great reference book by Dr. Ari Brown called Toddler 411 and she has Baby 411 I believe. Its my Bible for my little girl. It has everything you need to know and more. She has been on Opera before. She is great!
Good luck. This too shall pass. Elaine |

Teething is a difficult stage. The teething tabs worked for me- we just gave him 2or 3. Sorry you have not had the same luck. The doctor told me topical anesthetics really didn't help because they were so short acting. Is she also in the separation anxiety phase or starting it soon? This really exasperates the problem.

Thanks for all the help. I really appreciate the replies. I have not even thought of the tylenol as an option. DUH!!! What was I thinking. I will try that now. I really appreciate the other sugestions and I will try those as well. It helps to get advice as we go along not knowing what to do.
By the way, no she is not in the seperation anxiety stage yet. She perfers me to most others anyway but she will stay with G&G, her daddy and a few others withour much problem if they have the right toys. |

Oral Gel is short acting. Too much Oral Gel can relax the gag reflex, which can cause a potential choking hazard. The ice in a cloth, frozen bagel, cold teethers, popsicles are good ideas as long as common sense and a watchful eye are used. Also, you can give food (baby food) cold from the fridge, and formula from bottles maybe not quite as warm. The cold acts as a vasoconstrictor and helps with the pain and swelling. Try a varity of things and see what works the best for your baby. Never stop researching for advise and new ideas to share with us. :-) |

Try frozen watermelon or other kinds of fruit. Give it to her in a mesh feeder to avoid the choking risk. Also a sippy cup with a rubbery sippy for her to clamp down on as she drinks could help. |

Hi Heidi, I also have a 10 month old and she got all 4 top teeth at the same time. I tried the homeopathic and it didn't work. I gave her chilled washcloth and teething toys. I only used tylenol and oral gel at bedtime. after about a week it got better, once the teeth broke through the skin. I also started giving her biter biscuts, but they break apart so I have to be careful of her choking on them. Hang in there. |

Our boy is 8 1/2 mo. and is on his 8th tooth. Most of them have come in two at a time...he's actually having a hard few days right now. Watch your girl and see what she likes to chew on The cold rag works well for us...as well as the Tylenol. Motrin seems to last a little while longer, but our son likes the taste of Tylenol better. We give him one dose in the am and one at night when the tooth is just breaking through. Take heart! This is one of those things that will pass, but it's just so hard to not be able to do much to help their pain...I think it's parenting training 101 in letting go. :0)
