It might be a good idea to pack a bag with everything you need during your time at the hospital. Below you will find a checklist of some items you may find useful during your stay at the hospital.
____ A LARGE Luggage bag for packing all of these items you may/will need. (Reasoning? Because you will be sent home with three times the amount of things than you had come to the hospital with. They really like to load new moms up to make sure they have everything for at least the first few nights. Don't believe me? Ask anyone who is a mother they will tell you the same thing) ____ Your Birth Plan ____ Insurance Card, marriage certificate and any hospital paperwork you might need. ____ Eyeglasses. (Even if you wear contacts, most mothers find their glasses come in handy) ____ Head bands or hair ties (especially if you have long hair or long bangs. Trust in the fact that it will get annoying to keep brushing your hair out of your face while trying to concentrate on your breathing). ____ Lip balm ____ Hard Candy to suck on. ____ Clothes for Delivery (Some hospitals allow you to wear your own clothes during delivery, we suggest a robe and loose fitting shirt that you don't mind throwing away) ____ Slippers ____ Something to read, to pass the time during labor. ____ Music – again, to pass the time ____ Relaxation Items – massage oils, an extra pillow (large enough to help support your back, also in case you have specific allergies, and can be used to help lift your baby into a good nursing position while taking some pressure off you), tennis balls, rolling pin (no not to clobber father/hubby either! its good for massaging). ____ Toiletries – toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, deodorant, face wash ____ Change – for parking and the vending machines! ( TIP:some hospitals validate your parking, and if you bring snacks from home you won't have to worry as much about vending). ____ Snacks from home ____ Camera (and extra batteries or cord for charging) ____ Bathing suit – for your partner, in case they would like to join you in bath or shower ____ Your own wash cloth and towel for YOU and YOUR baby (in case of allergy issues and of course for comfort! Those hospital items aren't always the nicest to bare skin). ____ Clean clothes for after delivery ____ Extra plastic bags for dirty clothes ____ Nursing Bra ____ Breast Pads ____ Maternity Underwear ____ Your prepared diaper bag (This is just in case you need to make a stop on the way home for anythng). ____ Extra birping, feeding, coddling, and large drape over car seat blankets (You never know when any of these blankets can and will come in handy. Remember your newborn is small and extreme temperatures/changes in lighting will effect them) ____ Contact Numbers for people you would like to share the good news with! (best way to make sure all are contacted is keep your cellphone handy with all the numbers on it) ____ Going home outfits for you and your new baby ____ A car seat – This one won't fit in your bag of course, but it's necessary in order to bring baby home!
It may also be a good idea to take some time to brainstorm with your partner about anything else you think you might need/want to make the birth as comfortable as possible for you. Happy packing!
