SEE YOUR DOCTOR REGULARLY:
__ Schedule prenatal check-ups.
__ Discuss issues such as thyroid function, genetic counseling and bood test screening.

BE CAREFUL WITH MEDICATIONS:
__ Avoid using over-the-counter medications (OTCs). Never take OTCs without first checking with your doctor, pharmacist and/or the drug manufacturer about safe use during pregnancy.
__ Ask your doctor about the risks/benefits of any prescribed medication. As an extra precaution, look up all medications in the Physicians Desk Reference and/or contact the product manufacturer about pregnancy safety issues.
__ Do not take medication prescribed for someone else.
__ Tell your obstetrician if you are taking medication for any condition not related to pregnancy.
__ Avoid herbal remedies and/or health store supplements; not all are safe during pregnancy.

EMBRACE YOUR NATURAL BEAUTY:
__ Check the ingredients on your favorite personal care products before using.
__ Avoid solvents found in nail polish, artificial nails, hairspray, and perfumes.
__ Minimize your visits to the nail salon and dry cleaners. It is best not to go at all.
__ Avoid coloring your hair during pregnancy.

WORK TO KEEP YOUR BABY SAFE:
__ Ask your employer for copies of infrmation sheets on exposures in your workplace. (Employers are required to provide these Hazardous Information Fact Sheets to Employees).
__ Request to be reassigned to a different position if you are being exposed to reproductive hazards.

BREATHE CLEAN AIR:
__ Do not smoke and avoid second-hand smoke as well as exposure to other sources of smoke.
__ Open your windows daily, except on high ozone days. Always ventilate when cleaning.
__ Fix leaks and moisture problems to control mold growth.
__ Properly install and maintain combustion appliances (i.e. natural gas or wood burning).
__ Install carbon monoxide and smoke detectors.
__ Test for radon gas.
__ Stay away from gas fumes. Do not pump your own gas or run your car in an enclosed garage.
__ Have another family member clean the cat litter box.

DRINK CLEAN WATER:
__ Get your water tested.
__ Let the tap run for several minutes in the morning to flush out the lead.
__ Use cold water from the tap for cooking and drinking.


EAT SMART:
__ Eat a balanced diet rich in calcium and folic acid.
__ Buy organic or locally grown produce.
__ Wash and peel non-organic fruits and vegetables.
__ Reduce consumption of animal fats.
__ Follow fish consumption guidelines available through your state department of health.
__ Cook all foods thoroughly; avoid eating raw animal products.
__ Avoid alcohol and caffeine.
__ Do not use ceramic dishes unless they are certified lead-free.
__ Avoid microwaving in plastic containers or wraps; use glass that does not leach phthalates.
__ Avoide aspartame sweeteners.

AVOID TOXIC MATERIALS:
__ Do not sand, paint or refinish. Consider ANY renovation done in your home potentially harmful to your baby.
__ Do not use pesticides in your home or on your lawn and garden.
__ Use mercury-free digital thermometers.
__ Do not get silver (amalgam) fillings on your visit to the dentist.
__ Use less-toxic cleaners or natural cleaning products, such as baking soda and vinegar.
__ Use a damp cloth to remove dust from painted windows and door jams. Rinse between swipes.
__ Garden with gloves, and at a distance from yor home's foundation if built before 1978. Wash hands after gardening.
__ Avoide vinyl products such as miniblinds, flooring, and wallpaper.
__ Do not use mothballs.

GET CRAFTY WITHOUT CHEMICALS:
__ Avoid exposure to lead in stained glass projects.
__ Use only non-toxic paint and/or markers for art projects.
__ Avoid using toxic glue for hobby projects.
