When did everybody begin table food. I have a six month old who is eating all baby food my mother keeps telling me to start him on table food but I am nervous and I am not sure how to do this. Any advice would be appreciated.

You could start with soft foods or mash whatever vegetable ( peas beans, etc) you are eating. My daughter showed no interest in table food until she was closer to ten months or so. My niece was eating table foods, plus baby food at around 6 or 7 months. Every baby is different. Is your baby showing interest in eating table food. If not, I wouldn't rush it. My Mom was very "gung ho" to have the babies eating table food early, too. I think it was just what they did back then. I would take the cues from your little one. You could also ask your ped what they think. He is young so there is no reason to rush it if he is not ready. |

Don't let your mom force you to something neither of you are ready to do. Grandma's can be so pushy....they raised all those kids and they turned out fine...yada-yada.
Yes, if the little one shows interest then you may want to start table foods. My daughter started eating mashed rice in chicken broth. You could also add to the baby food. Feeding peas, mash some up and add it in with each bite of baby food, etc. See how that works. |

I agree with waiting until your child is ready. My son (now 14 months) started about 8-9 months grabbing for my fork when I ate or started watching food go in my mouth and would open his mouth. I ask my pediatrician and he said it was ok to try. He has been eating everything we eat since 9 months! He LOVES the Pasta Pick-Ups from Gerber and the Lil' Crunchers as a snack too. But spaghetti and pastas are the best! He eats it up like crazy and I just toss him in the bath afterward to clean up. |

I would definitely suggest listening to your instincts about what your child is ready for. My son still has a really bad gag reflex (like my husband) and so I have to still (at 21 months) cut everything up fairly small for him. Certain foods like peanut butter or other really chewy foods are out of the question (he just gags it down or throws it up). My mom watched him one night and I gave her a list of things he couldn't have. She ignored it and he ended up throwing up all over her. Needless to say, she heeds my requests now. |

if you introduce foods too soon you can cause them to be allergic to it later... its exciting times to see what your child will like and dislike, but take it slow and stay away from anything that your family has a history of allergies to, including substances used for the cooking/baking process.... Happy feeding! |

My son is 9 months old and all he has ever had is formula and baby food. My mom tells me I should give him table food, but I as his mother do not feel he is ready. I think this is something only you as the babys mom will know, and when you feel the baby is ready, then go for it. Other wise, feed him baby food. |

I definitely think it depends on your baby. My daughter was eating formula every hour so she started baby cereals/foods around 5 months. She is now 7 months and loves cheese, yogurt, and table veggies. She was also a preemie but is doing good and loves to eat table food. If your baby is ready I would try it. You could start out with one food at a time and see what your baby likes. My daughter only eats food once or twice a day, otherwise it is all formula, but that is enough to fill her. If your doctor says milk products are fine, cheese works good with a teething baby and the whips yogurt is a good texture for most babies. Hope I was some help. |
