What grade is your child going into?
To try to get a feel for the group, I thought I'd see what range of grades other members children are in.

I have 9 y/o son who will be going into the 4th grade next school year. I also have a 4 y/o daughter who will hopefully be going into pre-k. We will know for sure around the end of July.

Marissa, here is what I posted earlier. It is on our message board.

Hi everyone,

This is a little off topic for school, but I wanted to let you all know about a great resource for playgroups.

Most online communities, such as this one, offer great resources for connecting moms across the states for support, friendship, advice and guidence. It's nice to meet other moms going through the same type of things you are and to be able to lean on for support. But since we are all in different states, it's near impossible to actually meet face to face. I have found an awesome site for finding local playgroups, moms groups and various other types of groups for your local area. I actually organize one for my area in Virginia. Go to www.meetup.com You can search for groups within a certain mile radius of your zip code. The chances of finding a group close to you are pretty high. If there isn't one close to you, you can sign up for an alert list for when someone starts a new group. Or you can start your own. It is free for memebers, but if you chose to start a new group as an organizer, it does cost money.

Good luck and best wishes,
Michelle

Hi, I have an 8 yr old son going into 3rd grade, I also have a 13 yr old goign into 8th grade. They will be shifting back into public school from private. I am hoping the transition is not too touhg. My 3 rd grader is intelligent, great academic student but he is lacking in his social skills a bit. anyone else have this problem. Sometimes I ened to feel like I am not the only one. I have tried a lot of things but nothing seems to help.
Thanks, Desiree

Desiree, my 9 year old son sounds a lot like yours. Very intelligent (tested highly gifted), but socially a little off. He likes other kids, but never got into any of the cliques with the boys. He is either alone in the library at recess or he has a few female friends he plays with. He's not great in sports, and is very verbal, and seems to connect better with girls. His interests are very boy-like - other than sports. He's very tall and cute, but a little socially awkward, and has an adult vocab and way of speaking. I just wish he'd fit in more.

I have a daughter who just turned 8 and in September she will be going into 3rd grade. I have another daughter who will be 4 in the summer and she is currently in a preschool program. They did put her in with older kids but her teacher Miss Jan informed me this morning that she has come so far from September. Its hard to teach kids that are 5 and than her who is only 3 but she does keep up and does so well with her letters. I also have a 10 month old son who is with me.

I have a fie year old who is kindergarten, going into first grade next year, a two year old going to preschool next year and a one year old to keep me company while everyone will be in school next year. just an fyi about younger kids learning with older kids... my girls went (or is going to go!) to a montessori school whose premise is that kids learn well with a multi age class. That way they learn from each other, and don't have to be confined to what other's deem is age appropriate. There are other schools similar to this, and of course there is more to it, but i would recommend it to anyone. they can be a little pricey though. but kids definately can benefit from being with others not exactly there age. good luck to everyone to whose moving up in the grades and with the summer entertainment that we mommies are expected to provide ourkids all summer long!
