What's in Style for 2009?
2008 I did not worry too much about fashion since "Motherhood" was where I got most of my clothing. Now that I'm loosing weight and its a new year, I want to clean out my closet & get some stylish clothes, shoes and accessories. The only problem is I dont know what's in style? Seriously, I feel like I've been away living on a different planet for over a year (when it comes to fashion). Any one know what's in? Are skinny jeans still in? What about Ugg Boots (or Bear Paw, now for me since they are half the price). Are colored accessories still in? HELP

oooh.... good question! I highly believe in whatever is comfortable for you, just polished. I think its sad when people get too trendy or try to do someone else's style. The funnest thing for me is to go to the bookstore get a mile high books on fashion and skim the pictures and topics, I know you have a little one so maybe someone can watch her for you... workout in the morning so when you go, you won't feel guilty drinking coffee and piece of cake or (my fave) a crispy treat... ur in LA right? The Grove's bookstore is PERFECT! I spent many Sunday afternoons there...

But I know the transistion is hard. I notice the first time walking through the mall feels like a time warp to the future after having a baby, the second time, its like "I CAN DO THIS!" then try on outfits in the window...mix & match to suit your needs, shape, etc and you'll be trendy!

I liked reading the books because I had a better idea of what I should buy, like I'm an apple shape so I don't even look at jackets that cut off at the waist or tight shirts... & I know what colors look best on me, I cannot wear primary colors but other girls rock them soooo well, so figuring out little knicks like that then when you do go shopping you cut down on your dressing room items and its more fun than depressing....

My fave book is "I DONT HAVE A THING TO WEAR: The Psychology of your closet"

I also think for a "hot mom" wardrobe the key is mixing classic everyday pieces with trendy. Going one way completely makes you more grandma or trying to hard. You'll know when you've reached the balance!

Here's to our new bodies and new clothes! We're gonna feel sooooo good this year!

HAPPY SHOPPING!

Thanks. The problem is most of my wardrobe is "urban" wear. You know, Baby Phat, Roca Wear, South Pole, etc. I think now that I'm a mom and a year older, I may be getting to old for this. I love the clothes, so I'm stuck on whether to keep my style or try something new. I dont want to dress like a 50's sitcom mom all of a sudden, either, but maybe find a balance, between what a new mom, now closer to 30 should wear and the old "urban" look.

I agree, being polished is KEY! Great hair, fresh make up, lips gloss, done nails and from there you can be in a white tank and jeans with some really cute shoes and you're good! Keep it simple and if you want to add some flare do it with your shoes, accessories but not too many, forever21 is a great bargin, and make sure what you're wearing fits well! Skinny jeans are very much in and oxfords for shoes... but only if it looks good and you feel good! Always wear something long and or flowy/blousey with skinny jeans! Whatever you decide to wear to make it look great is make sure it looks new, no faded or worn clothes! Oh and to the I don't know if I'm getting too old for certain clothes.. just make sure no boobies and booty are out and you can wear anything that looks good on you! Keep is classy! :) xo

Candice, that is sooo true. Accessories will make anything look good and so long as your "polished" you're good. Thanks for the tips, and dont worry, no boobies or booty showing here! LOL. I so believe in dressing for your body type and w/ 20 excess lbs on me still, there is no way I'd do something like that.

Awesome way to sum it up Candice!!! Welcome to the group by the way! Now... make up, I feel like I am stuck with mascara and lip gloss, on the days I want to dress it up, I'll do "more" but I never feel comfortable with it and I always end up taking it off... does anyone else have this problem/solution?

Well if you have a great complextion I think that a light compact will keep you looking fresh and when going out should always be worn, it gives your face a more polished look. Make sure it matches your skin tone, you can tell by tilting your head back to make sure it matches your neck. Eye liner is huge for me but I know girls who do not need it... grrr! haha :) Try going to Mac and have one of the ladies who have similar skin tones and get tips from them! They do make up for free girls, just ask for help! Oh and make sure you have a great shape to your brows and if you need to, fill in the gaps with a eye brow brush and a color 1 shade darker or same as you brow... highlight them with a shimmer just below the brow line and make sure it's blended! White teeth, good eye brows, long lashes and shiney lip gloss!!! :) As for anything else you should deff see a make up artist and get some great coloring ideas!

Nope, sorry. My daily look is just like yours. Mascara & Lipgloss. If I'm in a REAL hurry, just lipgloss and a quick eye lash curl w/ my curler. But, when I go out, I have NO problem w/ my make up looking like a Drag Queen's. Ha ha.. okay, maybe not that bad, but you know what I mean. Depending on where I'm going, though.

During the week since I'm a SAHM I wear nothing but mascara, chapstick and juicy sweats! Haha But when I'm going out, like date night, out with girls, I do the whole thing too! Although I don't look god with a lot of eye shadow and I only look good with one or two colors! I just make sure I keep up with my skin and brows! :)

Lol... April you crack me up!

I've gone to the make up counters and when they do it, I think I look hot... and my hubby says NOT! He doesn't like too much. But I figure, I'm in my 20s now is my time to have the most fun with it... I had a great complexion, 2 kids down... my skin is going bananas, I was wearing bare essentials but my tone changes too much so it doesnt match any more, I'm going to try Aveda. I can't do department store face makeup, MAC makeup burns my skin!!! It was crazy the first time it happened. The entire staffs face was in horror... it felt like the conceler was eating away at my skin & unfortunately it looked like it too. I dont think anyone seen a black girl that red before!!!! I'm super sensitive, thanks to those baby making hormones! lol

I think my 2009 makeup resolution will be to try new things with the eyes! I'm not an eyeliner girl and the only eyeshadow I wear is gold/browns... aka boring, but I'm going to spice it up a bit! Yep! (light bulb moment) That's it... my reward for losing the rest of this weight will be a new black dress (for my new size) and a new makeup wardrobe!!!

OH my gosh, why do having babies do that to you! I never had dry uneven skin with pimples until Brooklynn! I try everything so now I'm just down to making sure i'm hydrated and i don't use any acne medication... that stuff just makes to worse! haha
