My husband has had ADD since he was a child but has learned to control it without meds. My concern is however for our 2 year old son. He is extremely on the go just like me, but when you give him a cell phone or when he is interested in his favorite movie, he'll sit still for about 30 minutes. Is this a normal 2 year old or should I talk to my son's pediatrician about ADD? My son also doesn't answer to his name very well which is normal since his sister doesn't either. She was diagnosed with PDD-NOS with Austism at age 2. She still has a speech delay and change scares the daylights out of her to the point she throws a tantrum. I was thinking of trying a gluten free diet to see what happens. What do you all think? |

I think his behavior sounds very normal. If any 2 year old will sit still for 30 minutes than I doubt he has ADD. Even if he had ADD would you really want to put your child on those medications? I would try a different diet first. |

I don't want to put my children on any meds if I don't have to. I personally saw my husband change after using the gluten free diet and I was aiming at my autistic daughter. My husband was calmer, but it didn't effect my daughter at all. I was thinking my son is just a normal 2 year old. I guess I'm concerned because he's acting like his daddy. My husband can sit on a computer or read a book for hours on end. |

I think it's also important to not label your child as having anything until you have a professional (not a teacher though) evaluate him/her. It can be very debilitating for a child to walk around with an ADD label if he/she even is ADD; much less if it is something else or even if it is just a phase the child is going through. Very few children even diagnosed by a teacher as having ADD aren't really ADD. It is one of the most overdiagnosed disorders I've ever encountered. If you're really and truly worried about your child, you can go have him/her evaluated (usually for free by the city/state). They will hopefully be able to give you some perspective. Also, I agree with other posters about trying a new diet. I once had a client (I am a speech pathologist/learning specialist) who was in kindergarten diagnosed as ADD. That is until I found out the mom was giving him chocolate cake/brownies/cookies before going to school (NOT SAYING YOU ARE THIS EXTREME). I am only saying that diet is everything to some kids. |

I don't know. I think it would be fine to talk to your child's doctor about your concerns at his next well check. But if your son can sit still for 30 minutes, I doubt he has ADD. Mine certainly won't sit still in one place for that long unless she's sleeping or watching one of her favorite shows. |
