Tricare Question for Off-Base Shots
Hey! I'm brand new to the group and we're a USMC family living in Baton Rouge. My youngest is 4 months old and I just got a bill for the rest of her shots...they showed the amt billed, the amt allowed, the amt paid and then a $154 amt that said it was toward the $1500 yearly catastrophe cap.

At first I thought that meant that we had $1500 of extra coverage, a line in the accounting to just cover the extra stuff not covered by our regular insurance. But THEN I got another notice from Tricare that said I'd have to pay it, and a bill from the doctor's office for the exact same amount.

The Tricare phone lady said that $1500 was like a deductible...but my husband is telling me that he heard one time that if you get shot at, you don't have to pay for shots...AND...since when is a rotavirus immunization a catastrophe?

Anyway, has anyone else had experience with this? We're all good to go with the approved physician and everything, I'm just confused about why I'm paying for immunizations.

Thanks in advance!

I have gone through the same thing with my daughter. It sounds like you have Standard. My experience is that because my husband automatically has Tricare Prime, he doesn't have to pay for shots or anything else at a Military Treatment Facility. I have Standard and get that letter everytime my kids or I go to the doctor. Did you enroll in Prime when you got to Baton Rouge?

We have TricarePrime and I haven't had issues with any medical with Prime. My son and I both go to off base Primary care providers. I would look into which plan you have for Tricare and if it's Standard I would think about changing it to save ya some money.

We had the same thing when we took our son for his shots. You pay whatever the tricare standard does not cover until you reach that 1500,after that you dont have to pay that deductible but it restarts every six months or so.I have had the same problem when I was pregnant, but I had enough expenses through prenatal visits that when delivery came I had no deductable.Tricare standard is a big headache.
