Acid Reflux in Toddlers
Does anyone else have a two year old with acid reflux? Our daughter has had this since she was born. All of the doctors said that she would grow out of it by the time she was 12mo old but she hasn't. She seems ok until we put her to bed at night then she wakes up after about a hour screaming at the top of lungs in so much pain it is hard for her dad and I to not cry too because we know that she is in so much pain. Her doctor said not to go into her room when she screems because she is just trying to controll us but we can hear her stomach turning really loud and she burps a lot when we pat her back so there is no way that she is just trying to control us. About twice a week she wakes up about 5 times a night with it really bad. We would like to know if anyone else's toddler has this problem and if so what do you do to help them. Thank you Heather , 26, from Michigan

My daughter does not have it but my little brother had it so bad for many years. My parents finally found a good doctor that didn't ignore his cries nor did he perscribe useless perscription DRUGS.

First they started him on probiotics to help with digestion.

Second, limited dairy 2 hours before nap and bedtime.

Third and most important, allow the child to stay UPRIGHT for at least an hour before lying down after eating.

Limit sugar (juice is NOT NEEDED In babies or toddlers. It is filled with sugar even when watered down and you can get vitamin C from other sources.)

Try this link. But please, try MANY things before you listen to the "quacks" and put your precious baby on drugs that have long term side effects! Drugs only clear symptoms, please don't confuse that with "finding the root of the problem," and fixing that!

Good luck

Hello,

I also have a daughter with acid reflux I will let my husband to the typing now, he's a paramedic and an RN. Acid reflux is more commonly called GERD ( gastric esophageal reflux disease) in young children. It took a long time for us to get our daughter diagnosed with this condition. We saw many doctors and finally went to a friend of mine who is a pediatric gastroenterologist. He knew immediately what the problem was. I have to disagree with the above post about probiotics, they are used to increase the good flora in the LOWER intestine and have no affect on the upper GI tract. In fact I believe that there specially coated to not dissolve until they reach the small intestine. They finally put my doctor on a medication called Zantac. It is commonly used for adult GERD but is approved for use in children as young as 3 months. Sometimes the use of medication is the only way to go. Don't let people put you off of modern medicine just because the want to push the "natural" was. Don't get me wrong sometimes they work but only in the right situation. Try putting the head of her bed up on some books, to make a slight incline, but no more than 10 to 15 degrees. That will keep the acid where it belongs, in her stomach and not her esophagus. As stated above, no spicy foods, cut back on the dairy products. It does get better, my daughter will turn 3 next month and has been symptom and drug free for about 6 months now. if you have any further questions please feel free to E-Mail me at SILVERWOLF64@aol.com and I will be happy to answer any more questions. If the doctors won't listen to you then find another one. Try finding a pediatric gastroenterologist. Don't know where your from or what your insurance allows nut that might be a good start. Best of luck.. Zack--

good good info above!

I agree with the medicine part. I only mean that you should NEVER go to drugs FIRST! I think modern medicine is GREAT in emergency situations but never as a long term fix! If you need to use temp until you find the proper solution and it works, of course by all means.

The problem with modern medicine is like I said, it does NOT fix the problem. Modern medicine masks the REAL issue at hand making symptoms less and more tolerable and sometimes hiding them so you forget the problem to beging with.

Zantac is good I guess, but there are ALOT of long term effects from taking it. Research from all areas before making a decision.

It's good to get advice from everywhere.

Please check this link out. I've been to a couple seminars held by Dr. Mercola. His site and he himself our very reputable!

Good luck again

How about combining natural with modern medicine? I agree with both people above on the benefits of both. My little boy had horrible acid reflux...and it was the silent type as your little girl sounds to be. He would wake up around 1am and be up until 6 with the acid coming up and going back down, but never out. It was absolutely horrible. I watched the clock one time and this happened for 13 minutes straight with him screaming.
I did a combination of natural and modern medicine. The natural would help if I timed it correctly and truth be told, the modern helped about the same.
The advice given above is great on both sides. I would encourage you to certainly start with the steps listed above prior to bedtime(cut back on dairy, being upright etc), see if they help. They may help to minimize enough that you wont need meds and she will hopefully outgrow it. If nothing else, it's a good starting point!
Good luck and hang in there. It is as hard on the parent as the child, I think. Especially with the lack of sleep for the whole family!

Best wishes

heather, my son also has had acid reflux or gerd (gastro esophogeal reflux desease) since the day he was born, and it has been a battle from day one to figure out his problem. hes now almost 2 and on previcid twice a day, which helps alot! my sons acid reflux was so bad that at 6 months he started to refuse to eat or drink anything, and we had to have a feeding tube put in. he still has it now.we have a "food therapist"+speech, that comes once a week to our home for his therapy.i recently learned that he shouldnt eat any fried greasy,or spicy foods+nothing acidic either (like orange juice, tomatoe sauce etc.) i guess he will have this problem his whole life.(got it from his dads side of the family!) so, i know how hard it is to see your kid screaming with pain and not have much i can do to help. we have a good g-i dr. here. if you havent taken your child to see a pediatric g-i dr. yet, i think you should. you might need to get a referal from your pediatrician.
