My son is 20 months old and I can tell he is very bright but he also has some very peculiar behaviors as well. He knows his ABC's by sight (can show me A, B, C, etc.) and knows most of their sounds but only says the letters "f" "o" "s" and "x". He also knows his 123s, shapes, and colors by sight as well. He only talks minimally. He says such things as "mama", "dada", "up", "yes", and sometimes he comes out and says things like "circle" and "green". The problem I have is is that he is obsessed with circles. I mean totally and completely obsessed! I thought about having him tested for autism but I have chickened out because he seems advanced for his age despite his speech deficit and the crazy circle obsession. When he does talk, he is very precise about his pronunciation, which makes me think that he is just a little perfectionist like my engineer husband. I am also a speech therapist, so I think sometimes I overdo it when I'm trying to get him to talk. There are no other little boys in my family (hasn't been for almost 50 years) and my son usually plays with girls in his playgroup. Does anyone have any advice? Do you think I should get him tested? |

Heather:
I understand some of your concern. My son is 25 months and is slow about speaking too. He says words, but only when he wants too. I think since he is the first child I have done too much for him, like getting him things automatically..not making it a nessesity for him to speak to get what he wants. He likes to turn in circles too, but he learned that from my autistic sister. there is a differance with autistic kids when they do circles too then non autistic kids....my boy runs around in circles just occasionally when is is playing to be silly..he does not do that for soothing or coping...and he is present...makes eye contact and communicates with me... Are you worrying about autism with him, or just some sort of delay...remember that little boys often are a bit slower at speaking then little girls and if he does not have a sibbling around to learn words from he will speak later too.... I think you may be worrying too much about him...unless you are really worried about it I would give him a few more months..he may be just fine....Your expertise may be causing you to worry...just because you may think about it more than others that are not trained in speech therapy... But, if you feel there are true red flags going up then listen to your mommy instincts... hope i helped you... |

That is normal. When my son was 20 months old he talked very minimally but he understood what you told him. He just turned 4 and now I can't get him to stop talking. My daughter is 1.5 year and talks way more than he ever did at this age. I would find a playgroup so that you can see how he acts in social environment, you can compare to other kids his age, and to talk to other moms. |
