Okay, I just ordered this program, Your baby can read. They were talking about it today on the The Doctors, and I checked it out and ordered it. I was just wondering if anyone else has ordered it or knows of anyone that has it and what they think about it. They have a lot of testimonials on the website, but, you know, just wanted to know. |

I've been very curious about it too...My son is 15 months old and doesn't talk much yet. Maybe I'll talk to my Dr. about it, too. I've heard boys develop slower that girls in the way of talking, so I'm not really worried about it. It would just be nice for him to be able to tell me what he wants! |

I Have the Baby "Hooked On Phonics" & although my baby is only 3 months old, I read to her. The program is for 3-18 months, then there is one for 18 -? months, etc, etc. They are like $40 each.. How much is "Your Baby Can Read" program? I cant sayyet if it's benefiting my baby, but I'm sure the one on one time we spend is. It comes w/ a DVD (Never actually saw it) a CD w/ nursery rhymes and 8 books. I would recomnend it. |

I looked at the Hooked on Phonics also, but I just liked the Your baby can read better for some reason. I don't know maybe it was all I was hearing about it on TV shows and the testimonials that I have heard and read. It is rather expensive, it was $199.99 for the whole set. I don't remember all that came with it, but it was like a 5 set DVD, flash cards, books, games, parent's guide, and more. To buy them individually was more expensive, and from what I read in the testimonials parents where going the cheaper way and just buying the DVD's and then going back and buying the flashcards, books and games later, so it seemed better to just buy the whole thing. You do get free shipping. The way I figured it was it was well worth the money if my son learns anything from it. |

Sorry I should have added before that they say any child can learn to read before they come out of diapers and it can vary from a couple of weeks to 6 months to see results. Like if you start at 3 mo. old, then they say by 9 months your child can read single words maybe 2 words. If you start later like 12 to 20 months, from what I read, you can see results within a couple of weeks. My son is 14 months and he talks fine, the doctor says he is a little ahead, and I have read to him everyday since birth at least 1 or 2 books a day. I sing to him all the time, and he watches Noggin on TV a little everyday. If he is going to watch any TV it will only be Noggin. He has actually learned from Noggin. Basically what I am saying is they learn from everything. Don't be afraid to read, sing, and even let them watch a little bit of educational TV. |

Wow, looks like your son really benefited from you reading to him daily. I've been reading to my daugther since she was two months old (From the Hooked on Phonics books). Looks like your son is on the road to success. I'm going to look in to the "your baby can read" program, too. |

I think it's so awesome that you guys are reading to your children. I'm no expert, but personally I don't think it really matters that much what you read to them as long as you read something for approximately 15 - 30 min. a day. My son is 11 months old and I've been reading to him since he was actually still in the womb. It's completely up to you guys. They also say rhyming stories and poems help with their vocabulary like Dr.Seuss and old nursery rhymes. I also keep a few children's books in the diaper bag, so I can read to him in the car, if we're stopped at a gas station. Kids also develop at their own rate. Our niece, Josie, on my husband's side has been talking with an ever expanding vocabulary since she was 10 months old. Our nephew, Sean, on my side and our nephew, Ben, on my husband's side are 3 and 2. Sean only just started talking a couple months ago and Ben still doesn't talk very much except for the odd word. You just have to do what you can and wait and see. Whether they talk sooner or later doesn't make them any more or less smart. Some times I think it would be just so much easier if he could just tell me what he wants or what's bothering him, but that time will come when he's ready and he'll be telling me things like he's not my friend anymore, because I wouldn't let him have another cookie. I just have to be patient. |

I really like it. My son has been watching the starter video for about a little over a week now, and he really likes the video. He has already started showing some signs of associating the words, but of course, not reading yet. We did have to limit his TV. I used to let him watch Noggin here and there throughout the day, but the video recomends not letting them watch much TV at all. I noticed it was hard to get him to watch the video until we cut out the TV. Now he watches the video all the way through and shows more interest in what they are doing and saying. I do still let him watch a little Noggin on the TV, but it is very limited. I can't really say just yet if I feel it is a must have, not been long enough, but as I said he is already starting to learn from it. My husband and I said that even if it don't work as far as him actually reading, but he learns something from it then it was worth the money. So, in that aspect it is worth the money. After finding more out about it and how they learn it makes total sence on how they can learn to read from it. |

You're right Kristina, kids do start talking at varying ages. My son is 18 months old and has what I would consider a very average and appropriate vocabulary for his age. It is interesting to note, though, that Albert Einstein did not begin talking until he was 3 years old. They're all different. |

Okay I just ordered it. It has a $14.95 risk free 30 day trial period, so we'll see. My baby is only 4 months old so I doubt I'll see any amazing progress w/ in those 30 days, but if I decide to keep it they split the $200 in 3 monthly payments, which is good. I figure that's what I would have spent on books and educational toys for her each month anyway and I'm a shoe freak. I buy her shoes she doesnt really need and have many she out grew w/ out ever wearing. I figure I can stop buying her soo many shoes and spend the money on this instead. I thought it was like the "Baby Hooked on Phonics" but it's not. This is not a program that just has you read to your child. It actually teaches (or so it claims) your child to read! I'll let you know how it works out for me. Kim, please keep us posted on ur lil' ones progress, too! |

Like I said once you get it and watch and read the parent's guide, it makes sense. They say the best time to start them is at 3 mo. So, you are pretty much on track. It should help with her talking also. My son is 14 mo., so I started kind of late, I saw the program and thought about it but thought it would be a waste of money. Then when I saw the show The Doctors promoting it, Dr. Sears is on this show, I thought what the hell and bought it. But like I said he is already starting to associate words. Big words like elephant, gorilla, reaching. You will see what I mean.
Okay I have to lecture you on the shoes. I was a General Manager for Stride Rite Corp. for 6 years. I will not go into all the crap about the shoes. But I will tell you that I was trained for 6 mo. to work there. The most important thing that I can tell you about your child's foot is the rate it grows. It really sucked when I worked there and parents would bring their kids in in shoes that were to small. A kids foot will grow, on average, about 1 whole size in about 3 mo. Now this is smaller kids, like babies and toddlers, the growing slows as they get older. Also when you stand your foot will grow about a 1/2 size. So don't check the shoe with your kid sitting down, when she is old enough to stand that is. If the shoe is hard to get on, it does not fit. You do not struggle to put your shoes on, you should not struggle to put their shoes on. Even if the curl their toes it still is not that hard to put a properly fitting shoe on a baby or toddler. If you do want to know anything about the shoes or their feet I will be happy to let you know. There really is a lot to know. |

Wow, thanks for the info. I usually buy my daughter shoes to match her outfit and only put them on her if I'm taking pictures of her or we're going out somewhere. You're right about how fast their feet grow though because just a month ago her smallest size shoes would still fall off (I'd find them all over the house or someone would call and say they found it at their house) and now, these shoes dont fit her! Not even so much that her foot grew length wise, but they got chubbier, too! |

Yeah, I hear that about the chubby feet. My son's first walking shoes were X wide. And he does not look like they are going to slim down any time soon. I don't really get it. You have a chubby baby you expect their feet to be fat, but my son is not fat at all. As a matter of fact I think he is to thin. But his feet are still so wide. I don't know, the feet change so much at first. And when they get all of the baby fat off it also makes a difference. But like I said, I don't know where my son is going to loose baby fat. The doctor says he is fine, he is below the average with his weight, but that he is fine. We will see later this month, he goes back then. |

I received the program this weekend. Good thing, as I was really sick & my daughters dad had to stay w/ us all weekend. It gave him something to do w/ the baby. I havent really checked it out too much, just kind of glanced at it, but it looks interesting and I have a feeling I'm going to be very satisfied. We'll see |

I think you will be satisfied also. I am totally one of those very sceptical people about things like this, and I am very satisfied with it. We were laughing today. My son has been able to show me nose, mouth, eyes, and ears, but only on my face not his own. Well since watching the video he has started doing it with his face. So he at least has gotten that out of the video. Ha ha. We are still waiting to see what comes of this program. Good luck with it. |

Okay, we just finished the starter video. We watched it for about 3 weeks. He is able to identify the words hi, wave, clap, eyes, nose, mouth, gorilla, tiger, dog, and arms up. When I show him these words he either says them or points to them or makes some kind of sound. For example with tiger, I show the word and he will roar or growl. The word dog we will either say or bark. Now of course he is not actually reading these words, but he is able to identify what they are by looking at the word. He is also starting to identify the sounds of letters. Like when shown clap he will clap then shown cat he will make the c sound. But he has a little trouble with cat for some reason. But again he is recongnizing the c sound. Pretty neat and amazing. We now have started the next video and will see what comes of it. But already I am highly impressed. |

I returned to work this week so I havent done the flash cards and my baby's only seen the video at her baby sitter's house this week. When I played it for her over the weekend she really does watch it. Her baby sitter was amazed at the fact that she sits through the whole thing & actually watches it. Ha ha, she told me "honestly, I thougth you were crazy. Thought 'yeah right, like she's really going to watch a movie' but she really does!" Starting today, I'm going to show her the video once at home & do the flash cards.
Oh and Congratulations on your son's accomplishment Kim!!! |

Thanks, I was very shocked also.
He just got it out of the blue. It kind of seemed like he was not going to get it, and he started not watching the video. So I said he is either just not getting it, or he is getting it and it is getting old to him and time to move on to the next video. So I started really working with the book and cards with him, and that was when I found he is getting it. I am so proud of him, and again shocked. |
