I saw something about this on the Festivus Party thread, but didn't want to high jack it, so thought we should start a new one.
We love celebrations, but don't want to celebrate Christmas for our family, so we have decided to celebrate Winter Solstice. We celebrate on Dec. 21. It works out really well for us since both of our families celebrate Christmas. We go to their celebrations, but this way we get to have our own family celebration.
Most of the Christmas trappings were actually appropriated from the Pagans Saturnalia celebration long ago, so much of what we do looks a lot like Christmas. We have a tree, mistle toe, wreaths, candles, food and presents. I think we will do more when my son is older. This does give us a fun celebration, but it also presents educational opportunities.
We also think it is kind of overwhelming to receive a bunch of gifts all at once, so we try to break it up. We start our celebration on December 6, St. Nicholas Day (another opportunity for education). That is when our son gets his stocking. It also gives us a deadline for decorating- the 5th. Then we do a countdown to Winter Solstice chain, starting a week beforehand. Every day he gets to tear a link off of a paper chain and gets a "chain present", usually something small.
I would love to hear what others do. We are always looking for new ideas, especially since we had our son. |
