how to move to feeding every 4 hr from 3
My 5 month old boy is still eating every 3hr. I just started him on cereal last week. He is doing fairly well with cereal he seems to really like it. I am giving him about 1 large Tbs with some formula (3 Tbs) at about 4-430pm. Than another Tbs at bedtime with a little more formula (4 Tbs). He stated sleeping all night when I gave him cereal at his bedtime feeding. I want to move to every 4 hr feeding but I do not want to mess up him sleeping though the night. Should I just be patient and wait until he is eating more solids?

Hi Lisa, Elena is 8 months old and refuses to eat any baby food/ cereal. So I don't know how to take that into account. But she drinks between 4-6 ounces of formula every 3-4 hours. She still gets up once a night. I have heard the more you plump them up during the day the better they sleep at night. How many ounces is he drinking or is he nursing? Maybe in order to cut down on bottles you could increase the amount he has at each feeding. Just a thought. Good for you that he is sleeping through the night though!

Lisa, James is 5 months as well. I had a similar problem as your son when I gave him 2 T cereal and fruit in the morning. Actually he will go 4 hours when he was fed cereal but during the formula feeding only, he wanted to eat every 3 hours.

I called his pediatrician's office and was told that I could up his cereal intake to 3 T 3x a day. He is now eating breakfast at 8am (4T cereal mixed w/formula and with 1/2 serving of fruit, and rest of his formula (6 oz.), lunch at 1pm 1/2 serving of meat with 1/2 serving of veg baby food, and 6 oz of formula, dinner at 6 with 4T cereal and rest of the veg, and final feeding at 11pm or 11:30 with 6 oz of formula and 2 oz of juice.

You are so lucky that your son sleeps through the night. James still gets up every 4 hours wanting food. I'm praying for the day that he will finally sleep through the night.

My soon to be six month old nurses every three hours too. I think that is fine as long as they are feeding between 4 to 6 times per day(according to pediatrician office). My son nurses five times per day and i just started rice cereal this week. He likes it but doesn't seem to make him more full. I'm only doing one tbsp and will eventually increase size and times per day. Great for your son to be sleeping through the night, I wouldn't want to tamper with that! Best of Luck

Hey Lisa..when my son was in the "transitioning to solids" stage, he had trouble sleeping because of his digestion system getting used to new foods and such. So, your boy may go through some natural disturbances. One thing we did to elongate the time between feedings was at night, we'd lay him down at about 9 or so and then about an hour and a half later, we'd get a warm bottle ready, get him up gently, trying not to wake him, feed him and then lay him back down. It's called a "dream feed" - My husband loved doing this because Micah was so snuggly at that time. He'd go right back to sleep (don't even need to burp because they don't take in air while drinking in this half-sleep) and get up at about 6 or 7. Now, Micah is now 8 1/2 months old and hasn't needed this feed for about a month now. He's on a 3 meals plus a snack schedule now! Good luck and remember that you know your son the best, so trust your gut!

Lisa
As soon as I started giving my baby cereal I quickly increased it, he wanted more and more. But I recently got him off of nursing so much during the night, he nurses at night maybe once. That means he nurses a lot more during the day about every 2-3 hours, plus eats baby food and a good amount of cereal, about 3/4 cup twice a day. But he is 8 months. I would give him a little more cereal if he wants it, but every kid is so different.
