I am so glad I found this group! I have a daugther who is almost 3 1/2 and she has a speech delay. She says very few words on a regular basis for her age. My daughter does have a teacher at the public school in our area that has been helping her. Her teacher has started meeting with her 2 times a week. I am just really worried for her to be able to start preschool in the fall. It does not seem to me like she would be ready. I hope this site will give me more ideas and ways to be able to help her. Since I have not heard of all of the other resources available to be able to help her.

Hi Cheryl and welcome! If I'm not mistaken, your local Early Intervention will provide special classes for her just like a preschool setting. With a little luck, some extra help, she will enter mainstream kindergarten.
Check out the lists/resources for great websites, products and DHA/Omega 3 supplements to do now to get her ready! I am a big believer in fish oil (DHA) supplements, they really do help make those brain connections... and fast!
I have a blog that gives a lot of research information and links to do some of your own, plus our story. check it out! You'll have to copy/paste it.

This web site is also a wealth of information and ideas on how to get your child talking!

Hi Cheryl and welcome! I know how scary it is to think of preschool in the fall and wanting so badly for your little one to be at the same level as their peers when school does actually start for them. I am wondering the same thing about my 4 year old. His birthday is late in the year, so luckily for us we have an extra year before school starts. An extra year for his speech to be able to catch up with him.
Take a look at our links under the resource section. There are some links there to some wonderful sites. If you haven't heard of all of them, hopefully they will help. One of my favorites is www.starfall.com My son will play with it for as long as I let him. It is educational, and most of the time if we go to the ABC section my son will at least attempt to say the words they are saying. It is nice that we are able to work with that on the same target sounds he is working on in speech. We also look at other sounds. It's so nice to be able to work on some sounds he does well to build his confidence.
If you know of resources we don't already have listed, feel free to add to the list. I love seeing new things there and checking them out to see more ideas to try with my son.
Again, welcome to the group and make yourself at home!

Welcome! I understand your concern with preschool. My son is 3 1/2 also and goes to our local preschool for delayed children. But I think my son has blossomed because of it. In a book I read about apraxia it mentioned how some children will attempt to talk more when no one is listening to only them (meaning there is a lot of noise and stuff going on) because they don't feel like they are in the spotlight that we so often put our kids in. And although my son's teachers say he rarely speaks at school, his speech has improved so much at home. Every day he is coming home with more words. I also do give him the fish oil supplements, but hardly think it is all that (although he did show an improvement before preschool started with the supplements).
I know its hard to think of them with other kids and not being up to par, but the environment is actually good for them (I think). I also think most young kids in preschool are way more forgiving and curious about others, rather than mean about someone being different. I've never once in any playgroup or outing had another kid not want to play with him because he didn't talk. A lot of times, they take him under their wing.
Good luck with everything. I hope I helped calm some of your fears about preschool. Kristin |
