hi all. my name is Nadiyah. although my children are very young me and my husband have finally come to the decision of homeschooling our kids. None of our family ever did this and do not support our decision. Although are children are very young (2 and 1) they both have a great desire for learning. our oldest can write the letter "A" ( which he did not learn from us.) I would love to keep the learning experience going and easily transition them into homeschooling. i recently found out that if i choose private HS that my oldest can start on some courses now. But I'm not sure if that is best. I don't want to overload him. I also have no clue how or where to get started. and the cost. We have a very limited budget. ant advice would be greatly appreciated. And also anyway to keep the cost down with out sacrificing there education. Thanks so much. |

Hello Nadiyah and welcome to the group!!! My mom in the beginning wasn't very supportive of the idea of us homeschooling our boys but now she is a big supporter of us. As for starting a set curriculum right now I wouldn't worry too much. Like you said you don't want to overload him. I would suggest just playing and learning through play. There is a lot of free things online you can get for teaching or things where you don't have to spend as much. I am going to be honest and say there is no one curriculum that is the best (at least I don't think so). So even if you did spend a lot of money on curriculum it doesn't mean it's right for your family. So just relax and you will find things that suit you, your family and your budget :).
One website I and my boys loved that helped them learn to read (again don't push it but if they want to check it out you can let them :) ) is the site www.starfall.com . It's an interactive website and it's free. There are some things you can buy at pretty reasonable prices but you don't have to buy anything. For now though with your children being so young learning through play works great for them! Please feel free to post any questions you may have. We have all been through just starting out to homeschool so there is no silly questions :). Again welcome to the group! |

thank you so much. i wasn't planning on pushing him. but he loves to write and pretend to read so i said ill try and ease him into it. i just told my last friend who i was was sure would support me because she was considering taking her kids out of school and home schooling them. but then she claims she cant afford it.( she has five kids, three in school now) but she hates that her daughter doesn't get enough homework. and she hates the school curriculum. but when i told her i made up my mind to home school my kids she was dead against it. and was all negative. im just really tired of supporting other peoples' decisions and not getting any in return. but thats the story of my life. after all no on me supported me when i got married either. but thanks for the site. ill check it out

I am so sorry you are not getting any support. I find that people tend to be negative about things they don't understand. I remember when we first started to homeschool my mom was totally against it. She tried to talk me out of it and everything. You wouldn't know it now though because she is now a big supporter of it. Give it some time and you might see some (not all of course) come around and start supporting you. The one thing to remember is no matter if you homeschool or not you are doing what is right by your family and you don't have to be accountable to anyone but your family.
Just do what you feel is best and if you need any encouragement or just some friendly advice please feel free to come here :). For me the first year of homeschooling was the toughest. In the beginning I thought I had to prove myself with everyone else. Thankfully I have realized it's not about them and it's not about me but about what is best for my children. Right now homeschooling is what's best for them. It may or may not change in the future but what ever happens I know I will never regret homeschooling them. |
