Are you involving your kids in your gardening or is it more a lonely process?
I ask my kids to gig and put the seeds, but sometimes they just want to play with the water and make a mess. At that point I realize that this activity is not relaxing anymore! AARHG

I tried last year with an actual garden with veggies in the ground in rows. Ha Ha! This year I just planted pots. My son helps me water the pots with a watering can about 30% of the time. Maybe when he is older, but I remember how much I hated helping my mom when I was little. My mom had a huge garden (about an acre in size) and it seemed like we had to hoe and weed forever. I guess what I am really saying is, keep trying to involve them but don't count on it. I eventally went on to really enjoying gardening and actually learned a lot from my mom, although I keep my garden simple and small, no crazy acre full of back breaking work. Good luck! |

I tried to get my kids to help me weed, but they didnt do a good job and I would have to redo it.I believe in first time you do it right. It is very relaxing for me to work in the garden so I will definately not let them help me this yr. |

I am finding that my daughter loves to help water, but any further than that is a mess. I don't really mind though, she is a kid after all and as long as she's not making a mess in the garden I enjoy her chaotic company. = ) |

Last year we planted a few rows of tomato plants in the back yard and my son (about a year and a half at that time) loved to help us water them and when they were ready to pick he loved helping us pick them (he ate as many as he picked though). When I taught preschool we used to do alot of things with the children and flowers/veggies in the classroom and they loved it so I will probably dig through my teaching materials and try to incorporate that into our activities this spring but I know that you have older children Vero and I have no idea what to do in that case....Good luck and keep trying. |

I plan on putting nearly every vegetable that is available in my garden this yr.The year that I got here and we moved into a renter house,I had a small garden. Now that we are buying a house, I want as large as I can get.I know by experience that squash are bad to plant, too, near anything. We learned that from experience. They absorb all the water. They get HUGE.They will have their own lil section as far away as I can make them.I planted them next to cantelopes watermelons tomatoes and peppers. The cants. came out the size of golf balls and the watermelons ended up being the size of a soft ball. The green peppers were small ;as were the tomatoes. The squash however were as long as my arm and as thick as a ghord. They were very odd.lol We shall see what this yr brings. |
