Kids with speech delay
Public online group

Annette, you were right!
The same week that I joined this group (only two or three weeks ago) I started giving my daughter 1/2 tsp daily of Barlean's Organic Oils Kids DHA (fish oil). Today she fell down and said "Uh Oh". I guess she thought it was fun because she got back up and walked down the hall repeating "Uh Oh" over and over again. The past few days she has said "Daddy" more clearly than I've ever heard it. Its like a switch just flipped and she's started experimenting more with her voice than I've ever heard. She very clearly said "bye bye" several times while standing by the back door with her shoes a couple of days ago. I'm not sure how much of it is just her natural development, but I had to give major credit to the DHA as well simply because it seems like her speech went into overdrive since I started giving it to her.

I just wanted to share my excitement, progress, and thanks to everyone for the advice and support!

Marie! That is so wonderful! I know what you mean about it being a coincidence or not, but I am totally sold on DHA! We have been out of the Nordic Naturals for a couple of weeks, and Jake won't normally take the DinoSmarts.(which I have) so he hasn't had any. We have been gone on a trip out of state for 10 days, and Jake just didn't seem to say as much as usual. When we got back (Sunday) I gave him 3 DinoSmarts and he took them, then the next day he took 3 more and today he is chatting again like crazy!

He has slowdowns when not taking them... so I supposed he will have to be on them until his language is more developed, but hey, I know they are working, I have seen the decline when he doesn't take them.

Suzanne- Jake normally won't take anything liquid, and he is picky about his flavors, but he takes the Nordic Naturals Strawberry flavored gel caps like candy. If your son likes yogurt/go-gurt you can try Choromega's brand of DHA for kids. It's emulsified and tastes like yogurt. I am thinking about trying those... it is supposed to be better absorbed than the oil.

If I do, I will definitely let everyone know how they work!

I hope everyone else is having great luck with the DHA... it DOES matter what brand and strength you buy... just so you know the gummies aren't very high in Omega 3 which is the most important oil at this age. :o)

The DHA that I found is in liquid form and fruit punch flavored. I tried mixing it in stuff but I always worried she didn't get enough of it if she didn't finish eating whatever I put it in. So I just started giving it to her on a spoon and at first she didn't like it but after a few tries I have no problems getting her to take it.

I haven't started actual vitamins yet though. Any recommendations on those? She'll be 17 months in a few days and she's also been late to teethe (she has 1 top and 3 bottom). So I'm a little cautious about Flintstones and gummies, basically anything that needs to be thoroughly chewed or that she may have trouble with. Anyone know of a good solution?

Hi Marie. I give my son (1 year old today!) Poly-Vi-Sol. It has 100% of Vitamins A, C, D, E, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, B6, and I get the kind with Iron so 67% of iron. I thought it was just for babies, but when I am looking at the bottle right now it also shows what percent of the above vitamins it has for children up to 4 years old. So, if your little one can't chew flintstones I would recommend this since it is liquid. I have to say though, it's not very tasty, but my son takes it without too much of a problem. It will stain clothes if it gets on them though, especially light colors, so you would want to be aware of that. I don't know of any other liquid vitamins. It does say either give right in the mouth OR mix with food or drink, so maybe you could figure something out with it.

Congrats on the great progress. It is so nice to see posts letting everyone know how our little ones are. That is so exciting!
