Sick child/ medicine ?
My son is sick with a high temp, and he has been sleeping for about 3 1/2 hrs now. He was supposed to take his meds (Motrin/Tylenol) at 4:00pm and 4:45pm respectively. Now, it's dinner time, and time for his Amoxycillin.

So, when your child is sick, and sleeps through when they are supposed to take their meds, should you wake them up to take the meds, or do you let them sleep, and just give the meds when they wake up?

Please respond. I'm driving myself crazy with thinking what to do!

I think I would wake him up. If he has a fever you'll want to make sure he stays up on the tylenol to keep that down.

Let him sleep. Your son needs to sleep as much as possible to help his body fight the infection. When he wakes up give him the meds the amount apart they need. Fevers aren't a bad thing as long as they aren't super high. Only wake him up if he feels way too hot.

I say wake him up. Antibiotics are very important to take on a very strict schedule. You have to keep the level of antibiotics in the body up to fight off what it needs to. I was a medical transcriptionist before staying home with my son, and I did have to have some medical training, like disease process where we learned about stuff like this. It is very important. You do have a small window that you can administer meds like antibiotics, an hour before or after the scheduled time. As far as Motrin or Tylenol, I would still give at the time needed. A high fever can lead to some dangerous issues, such as afebril seizures. It can be very dangerous to let a fever go. If the fever is starting to taper off then I would let him sleep through unless you have to give antibiotics, but if the fever is persistant, then give it. I think it is also to make him more comfortable and to sleep better. If he wakes and is that sick he can make up the sleep.

But if you are that unsure, call and ask your doctor. That way you feel better about your choice.

I think you should wake hime up, so that when the next time fo rthe meds comes around you are not over doing it...also, my doc told me a helpful hint....my son gets immune to tylenol after awhile, so he said if the temp gets over 102 to put him in a luke warm bath....and sponge water over his head and whole body repeatedly for 20 minutes. this will drop his temp faster than anything else will if it gets out of control, and you need to take him in. He also said its normal for babies to have a cold once every single month!!! its true, my son always is stuffed up at night!! Hang in there, and good luck!!
