Some Appropriate Manner

Oh come, let us worship and bow down; Let us kneel before the Lord our Maker.
Psalm 95:6

1 Chronicles 16:29

What is worship? A.W. Tozer described it this way: "Worship is to feel in your heart and express in some appropriate manner a humbling but delightful sense of admiring awe and astonished wonder and overpowering love in the presence of that most ancient Mystery...which we call Our Father Which Are in Heaven"*
For some, the word worship conjures up awkward feelings of being uncomfortable while singing in a church setting, but notice Tozer never mentions singing, raising hands or even being with others. Rather, he states it is expressing "in some appropriate manner" that which you feel in your heart toward God. In fact, the most commonly used word for worship in the New Testament, the Greek word proskuneo, has more to do with an intimate reverence toward God; being still and quiet before Him in awe and adoration.

The beauty of worship is that it is not limited to what anyone believes it should be. Whether you prefer raising your hands in public or falling prostrate in the privacy of your own home, the most important thing is for our worship to be personal, intimate and from the heart.

In the end, worship can never be a performance...It's got to be an overflowing of the heart. Worship is about getting personal with God, drawing close to God.

I am very picky I guess you could say about what church I want to be in. I want a church that preaches out of the bible. Not just says the bible says this but that actually shows you by telling you to open your bible to this chapter in this book. However, I am living with my parents and am unable to drive so I have to go where they go. I would much rather sit at home with my bible sunday morning and do the daily readings. I want to learn about the writtings in the bible and what they are really saying.

Hey Jessica,

Since you seem to be limited, I'd love to invite you to join our sermons online. It is straight out of the bible. I appreciate our Pastor because it helps me understand the bible better, more in depth, and it doesn't just speak on the good things about God, which most Pastors seem to do these days, but also gives warning for disobeying God and the schemes of the devil and so forth... which many Pastors are starting to "leave out" of their sermons.

Watch a few minutes of it, if you like it great, if you don't... best wishes finding something that encourages and strengthens you in your race! ;)
