Wow that is a tough one to answer neatly, since the details vary from situation to situation.
The laws differ in each state, and also depending on your circumstances, and how long you have been married. Assets, debts, and children together with your spouse means you could end up in a long, drawn-out, potentially costly process or even a downright nasty battle.
You will probably want to talk with a lawyer, to get the lowdown if you're considering it.
I was able to have my divorce (a million years ago!) done by a Paralegal for about $150 but we had neither children nor assets together-which also made it finalized within 2 weeks of filing. My mom had to help me do all the leg-work that lawyers usually handle on your behalf (that's why it was cheap).
If it's the right choice (as it was for me), then the end result will be worth it, but don't think it's going to be easy or quick.
Best of luck to you! |
