waking up early from naps
My 5 month old boy wakes up early from his afternoon naps. He is not hungry and he is still sleepy. Sometimes I can get him to go back to sleep with a pacifer. I tried to let him cry but he just wakes himself up more. He usually sleeps well for his morning nap. Any advice? He sleeps okay at night still wakes up once. He gets about 10 hr of sleep at night.

You might try playing music during nap that way when your little one awakes he won't feel alone, and will be able to sooth himself back to sleep. I only play music during nap time and I put the same CD on repeat until he officially wakes up and this has worked well since birth.

I would wonder if he doesn't need a long afternnon nap, since he gets 10 hours at night and a good morning nap? My son sounds similar and he is five and a half months. How long is his afternoon nap typically?

Generally babies this age need 14-15 hours of sleep per day, but of course all babies are different. If he still seems sleepy when he wakes from his afternoon nap he may just need some time to fully wake up. Give him some down time after he wakes up. If he is fussy and tired before his usual bedtime, move it up 30 minutes or so.

My son's nap schedule has never been rigid. When he is tired I lay him down. Generally he gets 3 naps a day of about 30-45 minutes each. Sometimes he skips the third one and is fine.

Ok maybe he does not need that long of a nap in the afternoon. He has been sleeping about an hour before he wakes himself up. Sometimes even if his other naps are not good during the day he still wakes up after an hour of sleeping. I guess it is just a habit. Sometimes he gets cranky in the evening sometimes he doesn't.

If you think it might be habitual wakening and it seems to occur about the same time into his nap each day, try going into his room just before this time and pat his back or do whatever you normally do to get him back to sleep. Also, maybe try keeping him up a bit longer in between naps so that he sleeps a bit longer for his second one.
