My baby is only 2 and a half months old but being we are going to have her baptized soon we have started thinking of her first b-day party, too. I cant afford to have a big celebration for her babtism and then a big birthday party for her a few months later. I have a HUGE family and just counting my parents, sibblings, nices, nephews first aunts & uncles & first cousins the list is almost at 100. This does not include any of my friends, neighbors or my daughters dad side of the family. We are thinkig of just going to dinner w/ my baby's future God Parents when she gets baptized, but are already getting the "we want to be there, too" from my relatives. Any one have any great CHEAP party ideas? |

Well first of all, if you want to do dinner with just the godparents, kindly share your feelings with all the people who insist on being there as well. Just tell them the truth. If they don't understand, poo on them!
Since your baby is turning one, she won't really be big enough to remember her party. Anything you do, as long as it's fun, she'll enjoy in the moment. Something as simple as having a family barbecue where everyone brings the meat they want to grill and a side dish. That way you don't have to buy food which can get very costly, especially for such a large group of people. You can have simple do-it-yourself games for the little children to keep them entertained. By the time you eat, have cake and present time, your little one will probably be exhausted! |

ok so I TOTALLY understand where you are coming from, my son will be 1 in 2 weeks and we are planning his party and I'm buying stuff now...we are having 2 parties, one on Dec 6th and one on the 7th...about 100 people in total. We are getting off a bit cheaper cause my aunt is making my sons personal cake and one of the party cakes and my SIL is making the other one. I'm only going to buy the enough themed plates for the kids to have 2(one for cake and one for food)...there will be about 10 kids at each one...Same with napkins and cups, the rest of the plates, napkins and cups would be plain paper for everyone else. and I've already bought some blue balloons that I'll blow up and put around the house and I'll only buy 2 balloons blown up...spongebob(thats part of the theme) and the big #1(which is the theme also)...so really with everything I'll buy it will only cost me about $75. But that doesn't include presents that we'll buy him, I want to buy a plastic wagon for him and I hope not to pay more than $50 for it. Walmart and Kroger and Publix have nice cakes....If it works better for you, you can do a bunch of cupcakes instead of a big cake. |

We just had my son's 1st b day party a few weeks ago. I just had a small party here at the house with family, but my family is not big at all. There is really no reason to go big. Like stated before they do not remember it. It is more about you, really. Another idea that you could do is a pot luck. I am sure everyone will understand since your family is so big. Usually people are happy to help out. |

I know your pain! I have a HUGE family and for our son's first b-day, we kept the guest list short and cooked hot dogs (we usually only buy Hebrew National, but we got cheaper ones for the party) on our grill. I made two large cakes (from a box)-- one chocolate and one vanilla. I also took some of each of the cake's batter and made a smaller cake just for him. I wrote his name and happy birthday on the larger cakes, and on the smaller cake I simply put 1. It was very cute.
After food and cake, he opened his gifts then we all walked to the park close to our house. If you don't have a park close to your house you could always have the party at the park. My neighbors did this and brought pizza from a local grocery store.
I hope this helps. Good luck! |

My husband & I both have a big family. My husband family are older since he's 11 yrs older then me & my family is younger. I know it sounds funny & weird. Here what I mean. For my son baptism we only invited Aunts & Uncles but we had to invite my husband's cousins b'cause the Aunts & Uncles are getting old & can't drive too far. Of course I felt bad since I didn't invite my cousins as much as I wanted them to be there but we're on a budget. We had a total of 50 people. We just recently celebrated my son 1st birthday & this time I only invited friends & family w/kids. This time a total of 60 people. If we had decided to invite everyone on both side of the family it would've felt like a wedding instead of a kid's birthday party. We explain to the family & they understood. I'm a SAHM so my husband is the only income. I b'lieve that you just can't please everyone & you have to do what's right for your family. It's okay to be cheap especially nowadays w/so many people losing their job, house, etc...
April I hope this helps =) |

GG, I know what u mean, my daughter's father is 8 years older than me and the baby, so his nieces and nephews are grown and so are his first cousins, with children of their own! Thanks all for the ideas, I'm seriously considering 1 party for both things. Usually my family will get the "Taco Man" to come to any parties. Dont know if this is common any where else in the US, but here in Southern Cal, I've been to numerous parties were they will have a "Taco Man" All you can eat tacos (some will make rice & beans and others will leave the side dishes for you to do). My friend had one for 100 people. $600. Not bad I guess, $6 a person for all you can eat? But that would mean i'd have to order enough for 200 people. $1200 just on food for EACH party seems like a lot. |
