Kids with speech delay
Public online group

New to the group
Hello all, My name is Marie and I just stumbled across the site today. I am happy to find a group for other Mom's with speech delays. My daughter is only 1 1/2yrs old right now so it is probably still too early to say she has a speech delay. However, my husband didn't talk until he was 2 and I didn't talk until I was 3. Neither of us were diagnosed with anything specific. I did require speech therapy for a short time in elementary school. So, long story short, I am not surprised that my daughter still does not talk. She is a quiet observer and communicates with us by grabbing our hands and taking us to what she wants to see, eat, or do. She points a lot too. And of course we have a significant amount of tantrums in the house as we don't always understand what she wants. It is hard to communicate because I have a hard time understanding that even though she doesn't speak yet she still understands EVERYTHING we say. I am hoping to find advice and encouragement here and to share what I learn.

Thank you for letting me be a part of your group!

Welcome to the group! I totally undertstand what you mean by tantrums! My LO is 22 months old and we are still waiting for first words...
have you considered teaching her sign language or using PECS at all? I have been teaching both of those to mine and they have helped quite a bit!
Good luck!

I remember how happy I was when I stumbled upon this group. This group has been the most welcoming and nurturing group of parents with children that have speech delays that I have ever encountered.

Please feel comfortable here if you need to bounce ideas around or even if you need to vent (we all do sometimes!)

Welcome to the group!

Hi and Welcome Marie!
My 4th child (Jake almost 3) is delayed in speech. The other 3 were all early talkers! Jake has been in speech therapy since June, and is doing remarkably well, mainly because I work with him so intently by modeling, expanding and using fish oil supplements. He went from 5 words to almost 50 words and approximations with animal sounds in less than 2 months because of the fish oil!

He did that grab and drag tactic and the frustration level went so high, that's why I started him in speech therapy. (my pedi said wait until he's 3, I said, that's too long) Anyway... gesturing and taking you to what she wants is a great start to communication. I read an article that stated that children who do use more gestures, have a more successful shot at speech down he road. It's actually a good thing... but frustrating at times.

Check out the lists/resources on the right side of the page.. there are quite a few speech therapy sites that you can visit to get ideas for activities and how to encourage more speech.

I also was a delayed talker, and stuttered in my early school years... I still do it on occasion when my brain gets ahead of my mouth, but with repetition and encouragement (without pressure) you can get you daughter talking in no time!

It's fantastic that her receptive language is so good... that will make her expressive language come that much quicker!

Wow! Thank you all for such a warm welcome!

So far I haven't taught my daughter any official baby signing. She has picked up and created her own sign for "give" and a few other things. What is PECS? I'm not familiar with that acronym?

Annette, thank you for the advice on fish oil. I picked some up today to start adding to her diet. I took DHA supplements the entire time I was pregnant and the entire time I breastfed. Since switching to whole milk I've had trouble finding a way to get the Omega3s into her diet. Lately I've been mixing cereal with DHA into her morning yogurt, but I don't think the cereal has enough of the supplement. Today I picked a liquid refrigerated bottle of fish oil free of mercury and am eager to start mixing it into her diet.

A big Thank You to everyone for your advice and encouragement!
