I don't often like to compare my child to others, but I am not getting through to him with the baby sign language. He is 7 months old now, and I have been doing a few basic signs with him since he was 4 months- mommy, more, milk, all done, etc. The only one he seems to understand is milk, but he understands it just as well when I say it. He doesn't sign back or attempt in any way. Both of my sisters have children and have tried baby signing. One of my sisters had complete success and the other one's child just wanted to attempt to talk until now when he is beginning to sign from watching videos at 18 months! I have been reading about it, and pretty much everything I have read says that babies will start to sign back between 6-9 months. I'm not expecting my son to be proficient at it by any means, but he doesn't seem to get it at all. I know it will take persistence and patience. Does anyone have advice or can tell me about when their children started acknowledging the sign language?? Jill |

Jill,
Hi from my own experiance, my daughter who just turned 2 on Saturday really took off around 10 months. Every child is different. My daughter after 10 months was a real sponge and I could teach her 3 - 4 new signs a day. She still wants to know the signs for things, even though she is talking non stop. She speaks clearly and up 6 word sentences which is twice the normal for her age, and I believe it all has to do with teaching her baby sign language. So, don't give up it will begin to pay off in a very short time. Do you have any books with the signs? or videos... they are great tools to sit and use with them.
I hope this helps.
