I'm a first time mom but changes I noticed in the last 5-15 years are about play time. Mothering nowadays includes:
-to be aware about what kids are doing in Internet. -to stimulate outdoor activities. -to avoid excess of "video games", TV and Internet.
Things will never change: WORRIES
I think you will have a big list of changes and also a big list of things will never change in mothering.
Good luck! Drika |

Things that keep changing is: what way you should put you baby down to sleep, what you can and when you can feed your baby. |

kids don't play enough outside like we used to... but then again it's not as "safe" can't let them leave your side anymore |

I'm a first time Mom to an almost 3 month old girl, so I don't have a whole lot of experience - but it seems like mothers are more interested now in doing things naturally-like limiting medications during childbirth. Also, it seems more mothers are breastfeeding and the public is more accomodative to breastfeeding mothers. I think mothers now are more concerned about the chemicals and additives in the food we feed our children and are buying more organic foods. |

Some of the biggest changes that I would have to mention would be how things are done while pregnant.
I have a lot of friends that smoke, as did I when I found out I was pregnant. Well with trying to stop smoking, you would not beleive the older women that told me they smoked and some even drank during their pregnancies. NUTS, but true. There is a country song that talks about we were born to mothers who smoked and drank, and our cribs where covered in lead based paint, and about not hearing helmets while riding your bike. Another thing is the way you let your kids play outside now. You are almost afraid to let them play outside now, to where when I was a kid it was nothing to play out after dark and so on. You have to watch your kids a lot closer now.

Definitely I would say that the need to breastfeed seems to change as time goes by. I mentioned that I wanted to breastfeed to my grandmother when I was pregnant. She was horrified. She said, "Why would you want to do that when they have come so far with formula?" My mother also said that she breastfed me but her friends were wary about it. Now everyone does it and I think there is actually a stigma attached to moms who don't. I ended up not being able to breastfeed due to complications after the birth of my son, so I know how it feels to get the mean glares when you pull out the formula. |

I'm a 1st time mom, but here a lot about how things have changed from my mother. One thing is wearing shoes younger and younger. My brother and I didn't wear shoes until we walked and now they have shoes designed for newborns -- have you seen the baby high heels! (scary) I agree with some of the other comments regarding being able to play outside for hours without supervision. Now you have to watch your children like hawks -- seems like being a child is getting harder. |
