Flat head/car seat
My little guy doesn't sleep comfortably unless he is being held, or in the car seat. I am concerned that his little head may be getting kind of flat from the car seat, so I try putting him in the crib. Sure enough, he wakes up almost immediately. Any thoughts?

Hi Robin,
I'm having a similar issue. Jack used to sleep in the crib okay but we went through about 2 and 1/2 weeks of colicky baby where he would only sleep if I was laying down on the bed with him on my chest. Now, he does not want to sleep in his crib. If I put him there, he wakes up immediately and if I walk away - he starts to cry. My husband says I've got to be more stubborn than he is and maybe just let him cry a bit but it's soooo hard!!! Last night we might have had a breakthrough. I'm not sure. Tonight will tell. I put him in his crib and he cooed himself to sleep - HALLELUJAH!!! My suggestion - just persevere with the crib thing - it will pay off in the end.

Hi Robin,

I was just thinking that maybe your little guy likes to sleep on an incline. There are inclines that are safe to purchase to put under your mattress that raises the baby's head a little bit. My DD did not like to sleep flat on her back and raising the mattress helped some. However, my DD didn't sleep well until I moved her onto her tummy. She had severe gastrointestinal problems and was always in alot of pain if she was flat on her back. Anyway, alot of kids don't like to sleep lying flat which is maybe why your little guy likes sleeping in his carseat so much. I wouldn't worry too much about a flat head. Their heads are still soft and don't completely harden for awhile yet. Also, my DD had an odd shaped head (coned on the right side/flat on the left). Once her hair grew in it's not noticable at all.

Oh another thought is that he also might like the snugness of his carseat. They are in the seat nice and snug but in the crib it is all open. Do you swaddle him? That might help too.

Just a few suggestions for you. I hope you are able to work it out.

I just had some success with a snugglier blanket as a flat sheet and swaddling him. I tucked the blanket into the sides of the mattress an dI think it worked. He has taken one nap on it so far with some success. Thanks for the suggestions!

I hope it keeps working for you. Good Luck.

Well, it worked some of the time! Last night was rough and I ended up putting him back in the carseat. At least he was okay with the crib like, 50% of the time!

Robin-

My daughter and youngest son had the same problem, sleeping great in the car seat. We too, found out that laying them on thier tummies gave them the comfort they needed. I believe that in the carseat, they do have that "cuddle" and security factor that comes into play. We were very nervous at first to try this since everywhere you here, "back to sleep". We talked to our ped. about it and he said that it is alright as long as you do not have anything else in the crib...toys, big blankets, etc. He made another great point that it was very popluar when we were little to be placed on our tummies, and I think we all turned out okay.

Good luck!

I just thought of something else we tried, a noise maker. Since babies hear the mother's heart and other noises in the womb, it may be too quiet. We purchased the little teddy bear with a heatbeat sound. It was successful. Later on, we switched to an alarm clock with nature sounds. The volume was low, but that constant noise was comforting to them.
