Peer support needed for the minority language. True?
Hallo Everyone,
I just stumbled over this website. I'm a German Mom living in the US, Los Angeles to be exact. My daughter is 13 months old and babbling away. It mostly sounds German. Only today she started to comment her waving good-bye with "baba". I guess that's a first for the English team. I've been speaking German exclusively with her. Her other Mom speaks English to her. Since I'm the stay at home mom, she has a lot more German exposure than English. We also spent the summer with family in Germany. That's where she started to say her first words: danke (dante), nein, da, mama. However, she seems to understand just as much in English as in German.
I've heard that kids may refuse to speak one of the languages if they don't know anyone but mommy, for example, who speaks it. They need to see that other people and especially peers speak the language, too. Does anyone know anything about this? How crucial is it to get the kids together with other German speaking kids?
