I hope there is someone out there that can give me some advice.....I have a 16month old son who was very sick with reflux and allergies up until he was about 7months, so he missed out on alot of belly time and now I am paying the price because the Dr. told me the reason he is not walking is because of low muscle tone and will be starting PT in the next week or so as soon as the insurance clears it but the Dr. told me that my child's walking and talking go hand in hand. He does babble and it sounds like he says a few words but other than that nothing. We recently had him evaluated by a ped. specialist b/c we had thought autism but she ruled that out but wants to check him again in 6 months. Is it true that the walking and talking go hand in hand? Any input would be helpful. |

I don't think so...otherwise my 21 month old would be talking up a storm! And we're still waiting for his first words... |

Welcome to the group Toni. I haven't ever heard that walking and talking go hand in hand. My 3 year old started walking right on track, but it is just the talking that is the problem...unless possibly the Dr. was really trying to say he has low muscle tone in his face/jaw/lips/tounge so they are the same type of problems. ? Have you had his speech evaluated by a speech/language pathologist? |

Hi Toni and welcome! I did recently read that low muscle tone can have an effect on speech, although the walking and talking don't necessarily go "hand in hand", but there are symptoms of low muscle tone that can be a symptom of other things that affect speech. (if that makes sense)
My son is super strong, can swing from the monkey bars and has been a climber since the beginning of time and crawled at 5 1/2 months, but he has a language deficiency. (I attribute his to the Varicella or MMR vaccine since he HAD language and it disappeared shortly after those immunizations. He has since made a huge comeback (fish oil has been a huge factor in this) but he still drools and seems to have a bit of a lazy tongue.
Read my story about the fish oil here: http://www.cafemom.com/journals/read/1219104/Fish_Oil_Journeys_Our_Experience
Here is an article that has several links to more articles imbedded. I hope this helps give you a start to finding the answers you need.

Annette is right fish oil does make a big difference. A few weeks ago I took her advice and did some research and what I found was amazing. Just google speech and Omega 3 and you'll see what I mean. My daughter has only been on it for a few weeks and OMG! what a difference and not just in her speech! She has made amazing strides. She now imitates sounds, her fine motor is improving, has said 7 new words and two three word phrases. Yesterday, she matched colors; I've been trying to get her to do that for months! Annette is my hero she always has really good advice. Thank you so much! |

Melissa, it makes me so happy to hear your daughter's progress! I am also relieved to know that it's not just me having great results! I was afraid I was sounding crazy! :o) It really helps all around in making those mental connections for the little ones, helps with their attention and frustrations, too. I bet S/T is going better as well!
I have started taking fish, flax and borage oil for myself and feel more focused and less stressed. I also have little to no heart palpitations since starting it too. I was having a lot due to anxiety and stress.
So happy to hear it's working for you... you made my day! |
