Changing FMLA
Hi,

I'm a first time Mom. My daughter Julia was born 9/2/08. I've never been involved in a political group before but would like to join one that is interested in changing the maternity/paternity leave laws. I have to go back to work two days before Thanksgiving so my daughter will only be three months old when she goes into daycare which is all too common. I also am not being paid for the last three weeks of my maternity leave. In New York which is where I work companies are only required to pay for six weeks maternity leave and they only have to pay you $170.00 a week! I'm fortunate that my company makes up the rest of my salary. Fathers have the right to take 12 weeks paternity leave but it doesn't have to be paid. Who can afford to do that? I'm disgusted by the way parents in this country are treated. Does anyone know of a group I can join? I'd start one myself but I would need someone who knows the laws and how to get them changed to help me. Thanks in advance for any input you might have.

I'm curious to read additional posts on this...

I would be interested in what can come of this. I had to use all my vacation/sick/personal time and after that, there was no pay.

I also had to use all of my vacation time. That was o.k. in this instance since I'll be going back at the end of November. I shouldn't have to do that though. We should be paid our full salary for all 12 weeks. Adding our vacation on to that should be optional.

Im in California and we only get paid for 6 weeks, too. Be glad ur not in Texas, though as I believe they dont get paid by the state. If their employer does not pay, they are screwed. Six weeks is defenitely not long enough to bond w/ a newborn, but what are you going to do?

It should be federal law that we are allowed 12 weeks. Some other countries get a year. We should be able to figure this out if they can. Maybe we can start writing our congress people.

I just joined this group and read this post. I just wanted to say that it is actually very easy to get a hold of your congressman, or woman. You should easily be able to find them on line. At least where I live it was easy to contact my congresman, Indiana. That would be a good first place to start. At least maybe you can get some questions answered.

Thanks Kim! I will try that.

Hi Cathy. I am also in NY and in addition to only six weeks partial pay, although I stayed home for three months I did not receive the six weeks pay until I returned to work. I do agree the laws need to be upgraded.

That's terrible! How do they expect people to live when they are not being paid? Most babies don't even sleep through the night at six weeks and then parents are expected to get behind the wheel to drive to work. I wonder how many car accidents are a result of parents who are over tired. Anyway, there is a website called momsrising.org. They have a section on parental rights. I am going to check it out shortly. I also plan to write my congress people and leave a message on the Obama/Biden website.
