Hey, thought I'd start fresh w/our "new member" threads since several of us keep posting to both of them.
It's good to see some activity out here.
Yup - I get the grandma thing. It's weird. When I used to take our granddaughter out, people assumed she was my daughter. Now I take my daughter out, they assume she's my granddaughter. They are 7 and 3 respectively. Tells you how badly I've aged in the last couple of years I guess! On the other hand, I always make a point to address older people in parks and what not as if they were the child's parents. You can never go wrong, and more and more often you are right.
You are right that we wouldn't have listened to our words of wisdom in our twenties. I wonder what pearls my parents are giving me now that I still won't listen to! Our daughter who has the 7 year old and infant is amazed, even at 28 how much different of a parent she is this time around. I guess it's great that we change. It's the folks I know that never change that I worry about.
On a lighter note, how did Halloween go? I'm having to lighten up a bit. I swore I would never allow the "Princess thing" to invade our household and, yes, you've guessed it, after much spirited discussion, Sarah was allowed to be a princess (albeit non-trademarked and w/out evil stepmothers) for Halloween. Nearly killed me, but my husband convinced me of two things: 1) it IS a childrens' fantasy holiday and, as such, she should be able to pick and 2) if I continue to fight it she is more likely to focus on it.
So far, she seems to be relatively even keeled. 1/2 princess 1/2 trains, so I guess her life is not ruined yet.
Other than that, Halloween went off great here. Nice weather, too much candy, no nightmare fallout. She and Daddy walked the entire neighborhood so that was great time for them. I think this is the first one she'll remember.

This is a great post. I have a boy but I always say that if we ever should have a girl , there will be no princesses in my home! lol We'll see about that but I think your husband's approach is right on and it's great that you went with the flow instead of pushing it b/c putting more focus onto anything makes them want it more. Hope it was a fun one! |

Skye - thanks for the feedback. It's re-assuring. Post-script to Halloween: not much princess activity since then. Primarily we are back to trains, and reading. She is obsessed by learning to read (isn't that WONDERFUL?).
She is still playing w/her princess dolls some, but mostly because she likes to dress and undress them. She seems interested in in transformers now!
So, it looks like Gary's call was good (as usual). He's a good 'un! |
