The Prerequisite for Pleasure

Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed—in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet.
1 Corinthians 15:51-52a

When it's time to take a long car trip with small children, the question they ask over and over is, "How much longer?" Children are not mature enough to realize that patience is the prerequisite for pleasure. In fact, given the choice, they might prefer not to "go to Grandma's house" if it means sitting in the car all day. But once they get there, they realize the wait was worth it.
Some Christians have a childlike attitude when it comes to traveling to heaven: "How much longer? I'm tired of waiting for Jesus' return." Time is a problem for us, not for God. For Him, a thousand years is no different from a day (2 Peter 3:8). Rather, God will send Christ to call His church home at the perfect time. And just as parents do on car trips, God the Father has given us activities to accomplish while we are traveling to our destination. Staying focused on those responsibilities makes the time pass more "understandably"—we understand the delay in Christ's return.

Which would you prefer? Waiting, but still getting to heaven, or not waiting and remaining here?

Teach us, O Lord, the disciplines of patience, for to wait is often harder than to work.
Peter Marshall
