I was reading in "Baby" magazine that for a 2 year old, it is normal for them to have around 50 words and put 2 word sentences together. My son know well over 200 words and what they mean, and can put 3-4 word sentences together. I'm wondering how everyone elses kids are doing that around around my sons age or older.
It would be nice if he was a little advanced in the talking, since he did not walk until 16 months, lol. |

I'm interested in this subject too. My little boy is 14 months old and saying over 150 words with a few phrases like "I see you" and "I'll get it." He also can name things in his books and point to the object we ask him to identify. We didn't know if it's something we should try to foster or if we should just keep doing what we're doing. Any suggestions? |

I try to foster my son's speech and learning as much as I can. Mainly, I talk to him using adult words, not "baby talk". We read a lot of books and I get him to point to things on each page and tell me what they are. He also knows his alphabet and numbers, so we do those every night at bath time. He capacity to learn amazes me. He is like a little sponge and tape recorder all in one. He will pick up a word after hearing it once, and then days later repeat it knowing what it is. A funny example I can give is the other day, he got bit by a misquito. He was scratching, so I told him I was going to put some "bug medicine" (Hysrocortizone cream) on it. A couple days later, he came to me with another one, grabbed me by the hand and pulled me to the draw where I kept it while saying "bug medicine" over and over. He obviously knew what it was, how to say it, and what to use it for. I was amazed by that, since I had only done it once. If any one has any suggestions for fostering his language and learning, I would love to hear them. |

My son just turned 1 and he can say and knows the meaning of, what I can come up with off the top of my head, is 17 to 20 words. He also is asking what's that and pointing, and he can find, for example the cat or the dog, in a busy picture. He also started calling one of our dogs by her name, instead of just dog. The other dog he still calls dog.
I have wondered also if this is around normal or if he is behind some or ahead some. The only thing I have to go on is my Nephew is 2 1/2 and he does not say a lot more than my son. They are talking about taking him to get his hearing tested. |

My son had just over the 50 words and was just starting to put 2 word sentences together like "all done" at 2 years old. He's now 3 months past his 2nd b-day and talking away like a blabbermouth :) 4 and 5 word sentences all the time. Everyone develops at their own pace. |

My son's 2 years 2 months and is a real chatterbox. He always understood a lot of words and said about 100 of them at the beginning of the year, but only really started talking a lot at 16 months when he started daycare. He did a few things early (walked at 8 1/2 months) and liked to be included with the adults so it was not surprising. Now he rattles of 5 - 6 word sentences and is getting a better command on pronouns such as him/her/your etc and using them correctly.
As everyone said "normal" is a long range and varies with the individual. Probably if my son stayed home longer before starting daycare he's continue understanding but speaking less, but as long as they seem to be understanding and growing well dont worry. |

My daughter is almost 20 months and does more pointing and saying uh till we figure out what she wants but she is adding to her vocab all the time. She added 2 words this week. I think she know atleast 2 dozen words and she started walking about 9 months holding on and then on her own when she was 12 1/2 months. But I know kids that don't say much till they turn 2 and then just take off talking. |

my daughter is 14 months and all her words but one are in Spanish. Her English word is "hot" she also knows some sign language. My mother and I talk to her in Spanish all day and my hubby does with all the words he knows her brothers and everyone else is in English as are the story times we go to or diaper dancing so she understands both. I told the doctor I want to do a 4th language and I figured at about 5 years but she told me to introduce it at 3 they absorb and learn it all in the early years she said to make sure all the languages are used. |
