bye bye formula?
So my son is year old now and i still give him a bottle before he goes to bed. Everyone has told me to take him off formula and put him on whole milk because formula will rot his teeth out. Its been hard these past few days bc he likes his babas with cereal in it and ive been feeding him his oatmeal and gave him a sippy cup of milk. He did ok, but it seemed that he was crabbier than usual. So i gave him just a sippy cup of whole milk to carry around instead of juice. but i cant seem to put him to bed with him finishing his baba and cereal first. Any ideas? am i just rushing it?

Hi, I have no idea..... my twins are almost 11 months and I also would like when I should change from formula do whole milk. I saw formulas for infants (up to 24 months) so I got confused about when to say bye bye formula. Does anyone could give me some advice? Thanks.

My son is two and I tried and tried right after he turned one to get hin to drink whole milk. So I got him the next step formula and we tried that for a few months and then tried milk again. That time it worked now all he wants to drink is whole milk. I think every child is diifferent and they do things in there own time frame. It may not be yours but it's theirs.

My twins will be 11 months old on the 19th, and I'm not planning on changing their drinking patterns, except to stop offering them a mixture of breast milk after one year old.

In the stores, you can see that they have formula for babies over one year. Those formulas are made for human babies, where as whole milk (from cows) is made for baby cows. Personally, I think that the formula, since it is fortified with vitamins and minerals and DHA, is better for the kids than whole milk.

Also, I don't think formula or milk will rot a babies teeth out. However, if you let the baby sleep with a bottle and suck throughout the night, then you may have an issue. But, if you give a bottle at night of either formula or milk, you may want to rinse out or 'brush' their teeth with baby 'toothpaste'.

I think what it comes down to is what you, your pediatrician, and your baby decide is best for YOUR child. Every child is different so the 'rules' sometimes don't apply.

Hi Adrianna,

Wow, what are the odds of that happening? I'm originally from Westchester county, NY and am now living here in Miami, Florida.

It's so nice to meet people who have twins - it is such a unique experience. I have two girls; Elizabeth and Katherine.

Well, keep in touch. Since our twins were born so close together, they will be experiencing much of the same things at the same times.

Take care and have a great day!

With my son, I switched him from formula to whole milk at a year. He was still on the bottle at the time, so it was pretty easy. For one week, we did 6 oz formula to 2 oz milk. Each week I would take out 2 oz of formula and add 2 oz of milk until he was on just milk. Then at 12 months we went from a bottle to a sippy cup with no problems.
In regards to the part about a bottle at night, I would suggest no bottle at night. Or if he must have something, just water. Now, by at ngiht, I mean after he has brushed his teeth for the night. That is so that the formula or milk will not stay on his teeth. When people say that the formula will rot his teeth, they mean if you give it to them after bed and don't brush their teeth or rinse their mouth out after giving it to them.
My son has a sippy with water in it, and that is the only thing he gets after he has brushed his teeth for the night.

My son gets nothing after 8:30 besides water. He takes his bath and we brush his teeth. He loves getting his teeth brushed! But most of my friends have had their kids off the bottle no later than 13 months and they seemed healthy. My pediatrician said to start weaning him from the baba and put him on whole milk. Hes doing great with the whole milk but we have always put cereal in his bottle at night and in the mornings. Now in the morning i feed him oatmeal and he gets a sippy cup of milk. Hes been crabby but Im going to stick to it. The doc says its time to start so im going to give it a shot lol!

I'm glad we're having this discussion. My son is 11 months old (will be one just before Halloween) and we have been trying to introduce the sippy. He takes well to it and only really has a bottle before nap time and before bed. (3 bottles a day). I was wondering how to introduce milk. He has been on the next step Enfamil since about 9.5 months old. He loves it and has never had a problem with formula or food at all. He eats table food like us. My husband is a big guy, it runs in the family. My son is 26 pounds and almost 3 ft. tall! So thank you for the post that you slowly mixed the milk into the formula week by week. I think I will try that and then once he is solely on the milk, I will try and take the bottle away. I am hoping this will take place before 13 months old! Any other advice please share!!!

LTs been drinking whole milk since he was 11 months old. I didnt mix them though and he does fine. He loves having a cold cup of milk. I think he just likes having his formula and cereal in his baba cuz i tried again today with the cereal in a bowl and his milk in a cup and hes so crabby. I guess its something i have to get used to until he adjusts to it. Everybody says its like breakin them off a paci but LT never took to a paci. Hes a thumb sucker and he sucks on his blankie and his bunnies ear lol so i wouldnt know!

sucking on the blankie and bunny. Thats cute. My son takes a paci (but he calls it a deech) and he has to have his duck (an Aflac duck my husband got that says "Aflac"), his "guy" (which is the green striped guy off of Yo Gaba Gabba), as well as his 2 blankets(Fire tuck one and pooh one). Guess he is a little spoiled...lol. He can sleep without all but his deech unless he sees one or we mention one of them, then he wants it.
He also has to have his sippy with water. For now I leave it in his crib, but once we start potty training, no more sippy in the crib. Right now, when he wakes up and is thirsty he just gets a drink. I don't want that to happen later and him end up wetting the bed.

I've never really had to transition from a bottle because my son is breastfed (still, at 15 months). Since I am a stay at home mom, he hasn't consistently used a bottle; just if we went out and grandma was watching him, or on in public during vacation where breastfeeding wasn't practical. However, I knew there was a point when I was going to have to start supplementing some kind of milk. I forgot to ask my ped at his 12 month visit, so she informed me at his past 15 month visit that I should be supplementing (even though I am still breastfeeding). He's been drinking water from a sippy cup since he was 12 1/2 months old. I just switched the water with soy milk (cuz we don't do cow's dairy) and he was fine with it. But, like I mentioned before; I'm not sure if the transition was so easy because he never really used a bottle in the first place. Not sure if this helped at all, but I tried : )
