Do you mothers' with autistic children have any thoughts on what precipitated your child's condition? I'd be very interested in your stories.
Thanks |

Hi, My daughter was born at 24 1/2wks her nervous system was not fully developed. She does a lot of rocking and hand flapping. Her developmental specialist and pedatriction said she's not autisc but she does show signs so I went to a place that diagnosis Autism and they said she was. From there I got help. She recieved services from a TSS in school and at home. She is doing a lot better. We still have some issues but they are coming along. She's also in a Autisc Support Class in Kindergarden. She just started this year and I see a huge difference. What about you and your little one |

I'm glad to hear your child is doing well and making marked improvements. My child does not have autism, but I am intensely curious about the this particular diagnosis. My son is 15 months old, and I have chosen not to vaccinate him at this time. One reason is because of the dramatic regressive autism rates, and another reason is because I prefer a more holistic approach to health and lifestyle issues. What I mean by this is that I'd rather rely on prevention and building up the immune system naturally than on vaccines. I'm definitely not trying to stir up any kind debate on this site concerning vaccinations, but I was wondering (since this is a relatively small group) about each mother's thought on how her child received the diagnosis of autism. Thank you very much for being so candid and replying. |

My husband, the father of my autistic son, has many of the same behaviors. The experts tell me that it is a genetic thing. He lacks the ability to do things like read body language and his social skills are different......I could go on and on... |

I chose to vaccate being my child was ill at the time that's what works. I know the debate on vaccine but it has been around for years and honestly people don't know what casuses Autism. I don't know the holistic approach. I know people who chose to do it that way. Everyone is entiltled to their own thoughts and how they want to bring up their children. My child does not make direct eye contact mainly because she had bad eye sight but from a Autisc view it looks like she' s not interacting but she is. For social she joins groups but parell plays. She loves to be cuddled and enjoys adult activity rather then children. Children don't always know how to react to her and she has no patience for them. |

Nope. Some things just didn't seem right. I have researched a lot about the vaccine thing too. And my son definitely didn't get worse, or lose skills after his vaccinations as some say. I have heard for the most part, that the signs are there no matter what and the whole vaccination thing can just bring it out more, if that makes sense. But I'll tell you what, my son is not getting his MMR shot at his 2 year old check up!!! I am not taking any chances with him getting worse. Whether it's true or not, I am not willing to gamble. |

Ok, so for Nanci (sp?) and Jean...if I'm understanding the two of you correctly, your children exhibited signs of autism way before 18 months. One of you said the signs were there all along, independent of vaccines, right? Or, were you saying, 'some docs say the signs are there before vaccinations'? I just want to make sure I'm getting your replies correct. I guess what I really want to know is...were your children born with autism, or did they seem relatively healthy, were they progressing at an age appropriate developmental rate, then regress into autism? And if they did regress, what is your opinion of why that regression took place? And, please, forgive me if these are rude questions; that is not my intention. |

Sorry Nanci. You were the first to reply to me. Your situations is definitely a unique one. My heart goes out to you. I am currently 21 weeks pregnant and can't imagine how it must have been for you to give birth just a couple a weeks from where I am now. You're a strong woman!
I now understand your second comment back to me better. Sorry about the confusion. |

No problem, I had my children vacciate, even the MMR for Krystin Lee. She was diagnosis till she was 5 and they are not sure it is Autism. They think its her dev. delay for being born so young, as I do. |
