breast feeding and introducing solids
Hi, I'm a first time mom, and I have a query about how often I should feed solids, if I still want to breast feed a while longer. Katie is 5 1/2 months old, and I started her on a little rice cereal about 4 weeks ago. I've just started introducing one vege at a time this week.

At the moment, I feed solids twice a day. Our schedule, roughly, goes like this... she sleeps through the night from 10 p.m. until 6 a.m., then she will breast feed for 20 mins; she falls back asleep until 9 a.m., then she will breast feed again, but for only 10 mins. At around 11 a.m., I will give her about 1/2 cup rice cereal and a couple of tsps of the vege of the day --she loves to eat and opens her mouth for more-- a great eater! Then she usually naps for an hour or so around noon. I breast feed her when she is hungry around 2/3 p.m. (she only wants 10 mins worth). She sometimes naps between 4-5p.m. Then I give her 1/2 cup rice cereal and some vege about 6 p.m. when she is watching us eat our dinner, too. She likes to have a breast feed after the evening solids (a quick one of 5 mins). Then she will have one more 20-min feed between 9 and 10 p.m. and she falls sound asleep in my arms for the night.

I don't mind this routine, but I'm wondering if this is how it's supposed to be done, i.e., do I need to feed her solids every time she is hungry, or can I feed her breast milk at some feedings and solids other times when she is hungry?

I'm not considering weaning right now because I'm trying to give her as much breast milk for as long as I can... (or until her teeth come in!) .. maybe a few more months longer.

I'd appreciate some comments and advice.
Thanks, Jackie

Hi Jackie, Whether you are breastfeeding or giving formula, she still needs a certain amount of milk a day. I forget the right amount of oz at your child's age. You'll need to look it up or ask her ped. And she's good to eat 3 times a day, twice a day needs to be cereal. I used to feed my daughter first, then breastfeed her. And in between solids, she got breastmilk. To your concerns about teeth, I didn't have any problems once they were in. She never bit me. I had more problems when she was teething, before her first tooth came in, and she'd use me as a teether. Ouchies. Anyway, if you wean her off before 12 months old, she'll need to go on formula. Don't hesitate to message me if you need help on the weaning part.

Hey Jackie,
sounds like you are doing good to me, you give her both breast and solids, it's best to feed solids after breastfeeding, I have a 10 month old and she's breastfeeding still on demand, she refused to eat solids, I am always trying, but she's fine she have two teeth and she's biting and she's never sleep through a night, I'm still waiting for that, hope this helps

You are doing it exactly the way that I did... My son is one year old now, and still nurses in the morning. That (unfortunately) is getting ready to be cut out though. *sniff*

What I did from here was to cut out his snacking first, leaving breakfast (first nursing of the day), and lunch. Then I made his lunch shorter, and introduced solid foods more each day. Once he was eating solids for his snacks (baby crackers and fruit mostly), then I replaced his lunch nursing for only solid food. As I said, he still has his first of the morning nursing, but then solid food follows within 30 minutes or so, so I know he's just doing it for snuggle time... He's not really eating much.

Liam got his first teeth around four months old, but he did very good at not biting while nursing. I hope you have as much luck!

Thanks for the great advice and encouragement. I really like the breast feeding, and I'm going to miss it when she eventually gives it up. I'll make sure to keep her fluid intake up... that's a good thing to keep in mind. I think I will aim for a year of breast milk. Thanks again. J

My daughter is almost 8mths old and I am still nursing. My ped. told me to nurse first and then offer food. I have the same issue, but I add cereal in the evening first because she is hungerier then. I nurse (5-10min she has never ate longer than 10) and then feed her fruit and cereal. She is usually good until 11:30 when I Nurse her again and feed her vegie. I am going to cut out the nursing at 530 that I do and replace it with food, and then she nurses's and has cereal before bed at 730-8pm. I hope it helps
