After much research, consults with our pediatritican and discussions with other moms. I am now starting Elizabeth on DHA Junior by Nordic Naturals. She had her first capsule today and I am starting her off slowly. I am really impressed; they really do smell and taste like strawberry. Of course she wouldn't actually eat the capsule so I squeezed it into her water which she drank down super fast. I think she likes it! ; ) I really hope this works for her. She has a 30 word vocabulary; however, she doesn't use it. She still does a lot of grunting and whining. I am dieing to hear my baby talk to me and tell me what she thinks and feels. Parents who aren't going through this just don't grasp how much it hurts not to hear your child talk. It kills me to hear other parents complaining how their kid just won't "shut up". Ohhh... how I would love to have that "problem". In fact I told my husband that if at any point in my life I say anything like that he is to remind me of the time my daughter couldn't even say Mama! Some people don't know just how lucky they are! ....Sorry about that, just needed to vent I guess. Anyway wish us luck! |

I started Josh on these same capsules this week too. He won't chew or swallow them, so I have been squeezing them into his apple juice and he doesn't know the difference. I too am hoping to start seeing an improvement with his speech.
Melissa, we will have to check back in a few weeks and see how things are going :-). So, GOOD LUCK! |

I have my son on the lil critters omega-3's and it seems like, regardless of the brand chosen, the omega-3 supplements really just kind of give that extra kick that children need.
I am happy you have decided to try them with Elizabeth.
I can totally empathize with you about how it feels not knowing what your child needs and feels, especially when they try, so desparately in their own way, to tell us.
Try not to lose hope though. There's so many options and techniques and therapies out there, and your daughter sounds very bright and very resiliant (despite her unfortunate circumstances).
I listen to other parents complaining about how their kids won't show up and I kind of feel sorry for them. They are ignoring this wonderful gift - that their children are communicating with them, while those of us with children who have trouble speaking are learning how to communicate with our children on a whole different level. We are learning how to listen (instead of just hearing) with our ears and our eyes and our hearts. When our kids are teenagers and saying less to us than they are right now, we are sure to know a lot more about what they are thinking.
Just my thoughts.
Anyway, I think Elizabeth is very fortunate to have such proactive, caring parents and I do wish you the best of luck.
I am not sure if I had missed or not yet so, I will ask. Have you contacted your state's Early Intervention Program? They offer (based on evaluations) free (regardless of income) therapy for developmental delays.
Sometimes it helps to have a fresh perspective from a qualified therapist. Our son's therapist comes for 1 hr per week and plays with him and figures out how we can make play more conducive to speech development.
Anyway, please keep us posted!

Yes, we have had her evaluated by our local Help Me Grow but they took so long to get us any information or a real intervention program (even then, we came to discover that she would most likely get therapy only every 2-4 weeks). So, we got her the help she needed ourselves. Now she sees a Speech and Occupational Therapist for an hour each, every week (the only hard part about doing it ourselves is financially, it costs $60 for the co-pays, but she's worth every penny and more). The OT is for her fine motor. Which explains in part why her sign language is not more developed (she has limited fine motor skills and can't form most signs). We've tried made-up signs but she doesn't take to them much. That's why I am hoping the Omega 3 will give her the speech boost she needs. At least to be able to communicate her basic needs a little better (short term goal). Thanks for the support and understanding. I will definitely let all of you know of her progress; exp. in correlation to the Omega 3. |

I am sorry to hear about the early intervention, if I were you, I would contact your state rep on that (send an email out, it can't hurt.) My son gets an hour a week just for a moderate speech delay,
Also, as much press as there is about children not watching tv, I have learned from my son's SLP that it makes sense to try everything that might work. Check out our list of resources, there are some great dvd's and websites listed that may help you out a great deal. Annette (one of our group members )told me about the Baby Babble DVDs. They are wonderful. It's like having a speech therapist in your tv. Both my son, almost 3, and my 1 yr old daughter really respond to them.

I know what you mean about people saying their kids won't shut up! It more bothers me, when people say I'm lucky because of my son having a speech delay. What is lucky about it?
I've been doing the same thing you are with the capsules. Ryan will drink his 'special water' with no problem. I must say it seems to have really helped. He went from having about 20 words in late August to over 100 now! I'm sure that preschool and his speech therapy are helping (he gets speech privately and through his school), but the increase is so dramatic. I always thought he was frustrated by not being able to tell me what was going on, but he does seem more frustrated now that he has many words - just not always the ones he needs. At least he's trying.
Good luck with all of it! |

Nordic Naturals is the best! Check out my journal post with a lot of my research for more information:

I know exactly what you mean when people say their kids "won't shut up!". They have no idea how difficult it is living with a child who is non-verbal. It is heart-breaking as well as frustrating.
Keep us posted on your results! We love to hear success stories! It gives everyone hope when things look dismal! |
