Does anyone have any advice for weaning off the bottle of formula to cup of milk. My son will be 1yr in a few weeks and he doesn't seem to like milk much. I give it to him in a cup with his breakfast-for about a week now. He takes a few drinks and then throws the cup on the floor and refuses it when I give it back to him. He has been drinking apple juice and water from the cup since he was 6 months old and formula in a bottle since he was 8 months (when I quit bfeeding). Any advice? |

Though my daughter never drank formula, she did hate the taste of whole milk when I transitioned her from b-feeding. I started adding a touch of flavored yogurt to the bottle (2 Tablespoons) and she loved it and drank it right up. I slowly have been decreasing the amount of yogurt until she finally drank a bottle of straight whole milk the other day. I also warm it up a bit and she seems to likes that better than straight from the cold fridge. I think it was too cold for her. Hope that helps. |

I agree that warming it is a good idea. Bottles of formula are usually slightly warm or at room temperature, so that should help some. Also, I would suggest giving him just a few sips at a time, more frequently throughout the day. Maybe try mixing with a little bit of formula, too, and gradually decrease the amount of formula.
I have heard lots of parents talk about this same problem with the transition to whole milk. It is pretty common.
Good luck, Marcia |

Steph do u think maybe it isnt the milk he hates but the milk being in a sippy cup. I know my son refused and still does milk in a sippy so he gets a hugh bowl of oatmeal to give him the calcium. Try milk and just milk a little warm in the bottle and see what he does. Laura |

Hey Stephanie - in a few short months, i'll be trying the same thing too! So, these suggestions given have been helpful to me as well. One thing I'll be looking out for are other changes he's going through at the same time. What else is new for him? Any other changes in his body, his surroundings, his new moves and grooves? Sometimes our little ones can only take so much change at once. I'd stop for a little while...like a week or so, and then try again when other new things aren't so new. Maybe it'll just take time. After all, I don't know any 5 year olds who drink from bottles still. Do you? Good luck! |

I work in a daycare center, and have transitioned multiple children from the bottle to a cup. One thing that you can do is warm it up a little bit. Some children need some time to get used to drinking cold milk. You can slowly decrease the temperature of the milk. Another thing that we have done that works is to mix half milk and half formula and again decrease the amount of formula as time goes on. Hope that helps. |
