Pets and Babies
I am concerned about my infant son and when he begins to crawl. I have a shitz shu/poodle and I'm afraid to have him in the same room when my son begins to crawl. Any suggestions???

I have three large dogs and a five month old daughter so I know your concern. We have placed gates in pretty much all the doorways, the best advice I can think of is to allow baby a special place to crawl where there would be some sort of barrier so your dog could not access it. Having pets requires more vigilance, not leaving them alone with your pet for a minute...I love dogs but it is just not safe. Anyways, hope that is of some help to you. Kate

Thanks for the advice. I'm on my way to look for a gate :) smile.

Gates are probably the best idea. I had dogs when each of my boys was born. They were female and very maternal and protective. We allowed the pets in the same room with the baby as long as an adult was present also. You just can't be too careful about animals and babies, though.

We got two cats when the kids were four years old. The male cat (Benny) every night jumps on the kids bed to say good night. After a year of having them I feel a lot more confortable because I know the kids have learn to respect the cats (not try to garb them when they want to walk away). It is more a matter of educating the kids than the pets!
