MMR Shots
I'm sure everyone does not want to talk about this any longer, but I just thought I'd put it out there. The Netherlands recently did a study on autism on children who have vaccines and get autism and those who don't and get autism. The study showed that the number was equal (meaning say there were 100 people who got vaccine shots and 50 got autism and 50 people did not get vaccines and 25 got autism, the study showed that it was then equal). The Netherlands is a socialist country so every single shot, no shot, etc. is recorded in an extensive data base.

However, I will say that I am scared to death about vaccines and autism, but will make up my mind when the time comes. I noticed someone said that they would have the shots given individually, that's interesting and didn't know you could even say how to have your child receive them.

I do think, however, no matter what choice someone makes for THEIR child and truly is only that parent's choice, whatever the outcome is. I have a very dear friend who chose to do a study on her son who had Grafts Vs. Host Disease and he died the week after the study. There is of course controversy on whether he was going to die anyway or whether the study caused his death sooner. The parents made the decision that this was the choice that they made and whatever the consequences were, it was their choice.

However, I do love hearing other's opinions. It's so interesting to hear that so many people have so many different opinions on parenting.

you might find this article very interesting http://www.cnn.com/2008/HEALTH/09/03/measles.autism/index.html that is all I will say. There is so much controversy around the subject that people even start fighting instead of just discussing it. So I just wanted to send you this link and make you own opinion. My advice is just read a lot, make sure that you talk to doctors. Make sure to have the scientific answer to all your doubts and study facts, no just "maybe" and "could, or possible" just facts. And don't let your fears decide for your child health.

I was one of them in the other post that 1. said that I was going to give the shot individually, and 2. also fought over the subject. Well I just wanted to say incase anyone else has trouble and how they solved the issue is I am having trouble finding a doctor to give the shots individually. I have not really put all my efforts into it yet, but the time is coming up that I need to, and just don't know what to do if I cannot find someone to give it individually. I still say I am going to refuse the MMR itself. Although the info you just posted of course makes it seem a little better, but still not good enough.

I know I gave Allison a hard time about posting stuff, but the info she was posting was good, honestly it is just scary. That is why I acted the way I did. Well again if good luck with everyones decisions about the subject.

I talked with my uncle who is a retired pathologist who was the head of pathology at a North Passavant in Pgh and the President of Pathology of America for years and he indicated that if a doctor gives advice on the web or otherwise and is still licensed, they should be quite careful because they can be sued just like any other doctor that you go to personnally, because unfortunately, even if you give your "opinion" who could give others who are not doctors that since you are a doctor that it is fact. He said there is a very very fine line between not being active and having your license and have your license and practicing.. either way, it is your medical advice (opinion or not).

My uncle still goes to many conferences around the world and this is one of the biggest controversies in the medical field, no matter how qualified you are. He did indicate, however, that there are studies that should come out soon that are looking at pre-MMR shots and post-MMR shots. Many doctors I guess believe that autism has been the same over the years but they are just diagnosing them correctly now. He said you have to realize that many many people with autism live a full and active life and that there are scientists and others who have what we now call autism who in the past we may have just called "a little off".

I think the entire thing is very difficult to just say, I'm doing this or I'm doing that when so far, it doesn't seem like there is one clear set reason or if MMR shots do in fact cause autism (or could cause autism). It is a fact that even if it could cause autism, not everyone gets autism from MMR Shots. Yes, I've been trying to read up as much as I can and I have a set of 8 doctors and we've been discussing this at every visit. It's so scary.

We have a client who has a daugther with autism. Each year they throw a huge benefit for autism awareness and studies. His daugther is doing so much better now with a different diet and certain exercises. She's showing so many signs that she is going to live a thriving and wonderful life. No matter what, it is very scary. We all just love our children (well at least I hope so) and want what is best for our children no matter what you believe or what your opinion is. What I do believe is that we have to do what is best for OUR own children and go with what our heart is saying in the end. And, if our children are one of the children who get autism in the end, then we have to do what is best in that situation. Our lives may be a little bit more difficult, but no less loving. I just pray that I do what is best for my child.

I'll be reading more and more on the subject. I just see my nieces and nephews and my cousins' children (11 all together) who have all received MMR shots (all the children are now 7 and above) and not one of them show signs of autism. Does anyone know how many children in the US have actually been diagnosed w/ autism. I'm going to look that up.

I have to say, I love this site. I think it's nice to hear other's opinions and seems that most parents, no matter what their opinion is, try to gather information on certain subjects. It just shows how many wonderful parents there are out there. I like hearing the other opinions, it makes me just sit and think and instead of just being closed minded (even if I don't end up agreeing in the end).

I just joined this site today but I came across this post and thought my 2 cents may help someone out.

First about splitting the MMR up, The Health Dept will do it. I spoke with a Doc that I am pretty close too and he said there is really no way they can buy the MMR splitup, espcially just 1 dose. So the Health Dpt. is your best option for that.

Now regaurding the MMR shot, I worked for my friend who is a Ped. Speech Therapist. I nannyed her little boy. Well, 95% of the kids she worked with were Autistic. It was super scarey being that I never knew anything about Autisim before hand. I was very worried to give my DD the MMR shot at 12 months. She was actually sick then so she couldnt get it. It ended up the next 4 appts I scheduled, she got a 103 fever the night before. These appts were in a 5 month period. I convinced myself it was a higher power telling me not to give them to her. Life happened and I got sidetracked, but I finally decided she needs these shots, so at 22 months she just recieved her 12 month shots. No biggie. The Doc said she is only behind for her 15 month, which she could get anytime around her turning 2. Then she wont have anymore til 3...so while I am for getting vaccinated, there are lots of different methods of going about it. Delayed and Selective is our way.

Thanks for listening

I agree with Jennifer. I have researched and researched and researched on the subject of Autism, and to me, there is no clear-cut evidence suggesting exactly what is causing autism or if immunizations is the only factor in autism. What I have also heard from a couple of doctors is exactly what Jennifer said. Autism has been around for quite some time, but these people were not necessarily labeled, "Autistic". Instead, they were labled, "goofy" or " a little off" or maybe "a lot off." There is a sliding spectrum scale of the severity of the autism.

I don't believe that there is a right or wrong way to go about immunizations. I believe it is totally the parents decision on how or what immunizations to get. Personally, I am more comfortable with splitting the shots up so that my kids aren't getting poked 4 or 5 times. So instead of getting 4 shots in one visit, I have 2 of them given and two weeks later, I take my daughter back for the other two. There are many different ways to do it, but the doctor and I discussed a plan that would make me feel more comfortable.

My children's doctor has also explained to me that it is too expensive for their office to get seperate shots for MMR, but informed me that their are places, such as the Health Department, where they do have the seperate shots available. For me, I just had to ask myself, "Do the benefits of these shots outweigh the risks?" And for me, the benefits DID outweigh the risks associated with the shots. It is a personal decision that I have put a lot of thought into, but is so so scary. All that I can do is hope and pray that I have made the right decision for my children, and I hope the same for every single parent out there.

I am glad to heat that you guys are finding the shots split up at the Health Dept. I have said before that my doctor said the same thing, to expensive for her to get them that way. She is trying to be helpful about me finding them that way though. I just had not called the Health Dept. yet. So now I am feeling better that it does look like I can get them seperate now.

Again I have said before that I worked with autistic adults for 5 years. And there are a lot of different influences on autism. Enviromental is one of them. But that can also mean like if the mother did some crazy crap while pregnant. I had to take classes every year on the subject and they are saying that the gluton diet is being very helpful to some, but one thing that was told to us that is very interesting is that in some way almost everyone has at least autistic tendencies. Like rocking, shaking a foot, things like that, that are a copeing or calming thing. The point is that it if the tendencies are there in almost everyone then who is to say that something like a vacination cannot bring it out. I just don't know and it is very scary.

My husband is on a gluten free diet due to having celiac disease and when we did research on a gluten free diet many years ago (like 10-12 years ago), it was amazing then that we had found that a gluten free diet is used for people who are mentally retarded as well and the success rates they have had for that. Makes me wonder about glutens in general.
