Just curious as to everyone's opinions on the idea of the campaigns being put on hold while the "bail-out" is worked out.
Personally, while I don't agree with the idea of the bail-out (I think the economy needs to work through these problems w/out the government getting any more involved than it already has), I think the senators should be in Washington doing the job they have been elected to do at this time & not out running around working on their campaigns for their future job hopes. So, I would say that I am for putting the campaigns on hold for as long as the senators are needed in D.C. |

I think they can take some time out of their schedules to do a debate and to make the debate useful they should have it on the economy and what they believe should be done about it. Like what Anderson Cooper said on CNN, "Lincoln ran for office in 1864, when there was a good chance he wouldn't have a country to lead. FDR ran for office in the middle of the largest conflict in human history--twice." If you can't balance a crisis and election at the same time then you can't be a great President. Plus if this debate does not happen that college will be out thousands of dollars. I don't think the schools need to loose more money. |

I agree with Alisa. Problems don't always line up single file. As President, one needs to be able to deal with everything going on at once.
Also, if you noticed today Congress had almost figured something out, then McCain and Obama showed up and everything fell apart. It wasn't just about getting it figured out anymore, but about presidential politics. In this case, I think they are just getting in the way of getting real work done. |

While on the subject of the bail-out, I thought I would share this email I got today. I think it would make everyone of us very happy if this idea was used - regardless of our party affiliations! ;- }
The Birk Economic Recovery PLan Hi Pals, I'm against the $85,000,000,000.00 bailout of AIG. Instead, I'm in favor of giving $85,000,000,000 to America in a 'We Deserve It Dividend'. To make the math simple, let's assume there are 200,000,000 bon-a-fide U.S. Citizens 18+. Our population is about 301,000,000 +/- counting every man, woman and child. So 200,000,000 might be a fair stab at adults 18 and up.. So divide 200 million adults 18+ into $85 billon that equals $425,000.00. My plan is to give $425,000 to every person 18+ as a 'We Deserve It Dividend'. Of course, it would NOT be tax free. So let's assume a tax rate of 30%. Every individual 18+ has to pay $127,500.00 in taxes. That sends $25,500,000,000 right back to Uncle Sam. But it means that every adult 18+ has $297,500.00 in their pocket. A husband and wife has $595,000.00. What would you do with $297,500.00 to $595,000.00 in your family? Pay off your mortgage - housing crisis solved. Repay college loans - what a great boost to new grads Put away money for college - it'll be there Save in a bank - create money to loan to entrepreneurs. Buy a new car - create jobs Invest in the market - capital drives growth Pay for your parent's medical insurance - health care improves Enable Deadbeat Dads to come clean - or else Remember this is for every adult U S Citizen 18+ including the folks who lost their jobs at Lehman Brothers and every other company that is cutting back. And of course, for those serving in our Armed Forces. If we're going to re-distribute wealth let's really do it...instead of trickling out a puny $1000.00 ( "vote buy" ) economic incentive that is being proposed by one of our candidates for President. If we're going to do an $85 billion bailout, let's bail out every adult U S Citizen 18+! As for AIG - liquidate it. Sell off its parts. Let American General go back to being American General. Sell off the real estate. Let the private sector bargain hunters cut it up and clean it up. Here's my rationale. We deserve it and AIG doesn't. Sure it's a crazy idea that can "never work." But can you imagine the Coast-To-Coast Block Party! How do you spell Economic Boom? I trust my fellow adult Americans to know how to use the $85 Billion 'We Deserve It Dividend' more than I do the geniuses at AIG or in Washington DC . And remember, The Birk plan only really costs $59.5 Billion because $25.5 Billion is returned instantly in taxes to Uncle Sam. Ahhh...I feel so much better getting that off my chest. Kindest personal regards, Birk T. J. Birkenmeier, A Creative Guy & Citizen of the Republic PS: Feel free to pass this along to your pals as it's either good for a laugh or a tear or a very sobering thought on how to best use $85 Billion!!

Just one mom's opinion, but...I get up every morning at 4 am, get my hubby off to work, get my son on the bus to high school (with all he needs) nurse my daughter, get her back to bed, take a shower, get my beds made, get myself ready for work, nurse my daughter, play with her, get my mom situated to watch her & get to work. Then I pick up my son from football, get home, make dinner etc, etc.
You mean to tell me he cant find 2 hours to tell the American people what he thinks on important issues? This is laughable at best!

But you are not an old man. He might miss his nap if he took 2 hours to do something like that.
(I know that was a cheap shot, but I couldn't resist LOL) |

Oh, and on the "Birk bailout plan"....
the math there is SOOOOOOO wrong. He divided by 200 thousand instead of million Americans. The $85 billion bailout referred to there would only be about $370 per adult. Even the $700 billion bailout they are looking at now only works out to be a bit over $3000 per adult. Still, I like the idea. Even that kind of money coming my way would make a dent in my personal bad debt, and I would think that would be more important for the government to bail out CITIZENS than greedy corporations, but what do I know....it's only my (and your) money they are talking about spending like this. Even if they didn't give me money, I'd rather use the money to help get rid of some of my own debt than some a$$hole richie-rich corporate guys. GRRRRRR |
