I just joined the PTO at my elementary school. They are VERY active. Their most successful event is an annual tricky tray, which involves each class gathering money for a basic that gets auctioned at the tricky tray event held at a banquet center. This event is advertised for the parents at the school and then locally. It is a huge success and last year's funds payed for 5 smartboards which are now in the school and parenting seminars (one a month). They also do the entertainment books, market day and other fundraisers through the year. |

They have something similar in my kids school. With all the budget cut the PTA has to contribute in order to have extra curricular activities.
At another school they rent their outdoor space Saturday to a flea market. I am sure it is a huge source of income.

They also host an flea market type event in the spring, but it isn't that popular. It has the usual market-from-home stuff that people get plenty of at the host parties through the year. the PTO also runs the extracurricular activities by parent volunteers to coach and/or sponsor teams through the town recreation center. |

In our school, second graders will go to the YMCA swimming pool once a week and the parents volunteer to accompany the children. It is a great initiative so that every kid get the chance to learn to swim.
