My 28-month old son starts speech therapy this week-only says "mom" or "dad"--anyone else been through this? |

Both of our older boys were delayed in speaking; oldest said only no and dada until he was 2, had about 10 words by the time he was 3 and is now more verbal than we appreciate! He is 12 and developed his speech skills on his own timetable. The second oldest did not say a single word until he was nearly 3 years, then gained only a few words at a time. At 5 years, he started speech therapy and graduated before he started first grade. He is in the gifted and talented programs in public school. There is a book about many geniuses who did not speak until much later in life than usual....Einstein, etc.... If your child's hearing has been tested and is fine, your speech therapist will probably tell you it is too early to worry. |

I'm having the same problems with my son who just turned 2. I spoke with my pediatrician about it at his last wellness visit and he gave me a referral for the Infants and Toddlers Program for a speech pathologist to evaluate him. I would say he can say about 8 to 10 words independently. However, he still whines when he want something and he is not using two word phrases at all. I curious to see what the speech pathologist is going to say or if I'm just being too paranoid. |

My youngest son is 3 and has been slow with his speech from the get go.Sometimes it is very frustrating for all of us and he went through a biting faze out of frustation. Now we encourage him to slow down with his words and we also have to help him say them properly as he isn't very clear. This helps alot as I used to get him whatever he wanted without trying to help him say it first. My son was an early learner in many other areas, feeding himself, walking up and down the stairs etc . |

Have you checked to see if they have a hearing problem? My husband had to have tubes put in his ears because they hadn't formed properly so his speech was delayed until around the age of 3. |

Thank you everyone for the good advice/thoughts! It's nice to hear this problem isn't uncommon. My son's hearing is fine, so I am anxious to get started with the speech therapy! Unfortunately, due to some paperwork issues, the therapist hasn't come out yet, but hopefully, next week! In the meantime, my son has been starting to use his own kind of "sign language" to get his point across when he wants something. I guess he is trying to communicate the best way he can, which is fine, because I don't want him to get too frustrated. Thank you again everyone!!! Jenna
