Hi,
I am exclusively breastfeeding a three week old and it is going well. I have a question about how long it takes food to move through my digestive system, through my breast milk to my daughter's digestive system?
Thanks.

most is already broken down by the time it gets to your milk. It has to go into your bloodstream also that is why they say it's ok for you to have a beer or a glass of wine. That is why it is a debate if there is a such thing as "gassy" foods. (i.e. broccoli) some experts say by the time it gets to the baby it is only the proteins and calories the baby gets so it shouldn't make them gassy. You can also go to La Leche League web site and it has tons of info and meetings you can attend. (a great way to meet other moms that also BF and have babies around the same age) they talk about nutrition and all the other interesting stuff |

I too am exclusively breastfeeding a 7 wk old and he is excessively gassy. He also spits up quite frequently and sometimes even vomits. I thought he may have reflux but I'm not too sure. I have noticed whenever I eat bell peppers it tends to wreak havoc on him the next day.... |

Keep a food diary if the baby has those problems it can be also allergies but reflux is huge also my daughter had it so it would be good to mention. |

Hi, I found that drinking Mothers' Milk tea was helpful too. It is supposed to help if you ate stronger foods and stuff, also helps with milk supply. |

I read somewhere that it's ok to have alcohol 2 hrs before nursing... so I've only had a glass of wine 2 hrs before I nursed my daughter. I haven't experimented with any time less than 2 hrs.
The food diary is an awesome idea! It definitely would have been helpful the first week we brought the baby home.
Where do you find Mother's Milk tea leaves? I've never heard of it before. |

I was told it can take up to 6 hours. I've have an almost 4 month old and its been almost instant (I feed him after I've eaten and he hurts and screams) and its been up to about 5-7 hours. It really depends on what i've eaten. Different food take different amount of times to digest so something that digest faster....ie drinks, simple foods are going to effect your daughter a lot faster than something in more complex foods. Good luck with breastfeeding and Congrats! |

The mothers milk tea is at health food stores, fruitful yield, whole foods, I have also seen it at my dominicks. I think the company that makes it is Traditional Medicinal, or something like that. |
