Hi Gretchen -

We are a one income family. We get by. Some months are tougher than others. But some how we always seem to be able to make it work.

When I first quit work (I worked with the same company for 23 years) we went through all our finances with a fine tooth comb.

Then we started cutting stuff down and out. For example we went from a 3 movie membership to 1, we saved over $15 a month, doesn't sound like much but every little bit helps.

We also changed our tv, phone and internet provider and saved over a $100 a month on that.

There are so many little ways to save money in the way we do things in our everyday lives. Such as eating out once a month instead of every weekend, or if you're someone who eats out 3 times a week maybe eat out only once a week, you get the picture.

I know it may seem scary at first, but I am one to say give it a try and if all else fails, there's always the option of going back to work.

Hope it all works out.

Blessings -

Cathy

Hi Gretchen and WELCOME! I hear your struggle and found that outlining a weekly budget for you family can be very helpful. Also, Focus on the Family is a wonderful organization and I found the following link that can help with your financial concerns: http://www.family.org/lifechallenges/ManagingMoney/
if you scroll down the page you'll see Battling the Monthly Budget section...Hope this resource helps!

Blessings to you and your family!

Hi Gretchen! It is possible to do, but it is not easy. My husband and I do it, but we have made a lot of sacrifices too. The ideas that have been given so far are great. Some to add to that are -- how often do you buy new clothes? My girls wear lots of hand-me-downs, but I make sure that they look nice. One good thing about not eating out as much is that you and your family are also exposed to a lot less, so you may get sick less often which means fewer doctors' bills. My husband and I also don't have car payments--that helps. If it is possible to go down to one car, that might be something to consider. I cut coupons like crazy as well. EVERY little bit helps. Other things to look at would be...could you keep someone else's child/children for a little extra pay? Can you cut you electricity bill some? Is there something like a daily trip to Starbucks that your husband could cut out? All of these are things to look at. It is worth it if you both are willing to make it work.

Hi Gretchen, I have been a homemaker for 15 years. All of which have been a tremendous walk of faith. It is possible to survive on that income. How do I know? First, because I have. The key is so simple I almost missed it numerous times. It is possible, because "with God all things are possible." There are a million practical tips to stretch funds and all of them are relevant, but until I grasped that the one income journey was going to be alot like Peter walking on water, I often sank into fear. Keep looking up to God and employing the wisdom of other women who are on the same journey and you will find that youu're more blessed for your obedience to God's Word to say home, than if you charted your own course.
