I think she's an asset for a number of reasons...politically, she has experience with "small town folk" and is more likely to understand their needs. Personally, her life story shows that she is a real person/family woman...all her kids (one with a disability) and her pregnant daughter just make her a realistic--average, if I am so bold to say so--citizen, rather than a politician in the spotlight. She's not all news and cameras...she's a mom who just happens to have family issues AND a successful political career. |

I would have to agree that she is an asset. All of the struggles she has been facing just goes to show her character. It is so nice to see someone in such a high position facing the same issues that the rest of America is facing! And, through it all she has remained professional, civil and calm. Something that we all as moms know can be very hard to do especially when your every move & word is being scrutinized by outsiders!
I say go McCain/Palin! |

WARNING: EXTREMELY STRONG OPINION...IT IS POSSIBLE YOU WILL BE OFFENDED. IF YOU CAN'T HANDLE IT LIKE AN ADULT, DON'T READ ANY FURTHER.
Having said that....
I don't know how it will play out with her as far as being an asset or liability goes, but I think she is a horrible mom and therefore (in my eyes and logic), a horrible person. Her littlest baby is FOUR MONTHS OLD!!!!!! Even under normal circumstances, I would think she would need to be there for her son. That isn't even old enough to be away from the breast (according to the American Academy of Pedriatics, babies should be EXCLUSIVELY breastfed for a MINUMUM of 6 months and should be breastfed for at least a year), let alone away from the mom for extended periods of time. Not only that, but this poor baby has special needs, but she's dumping him off on whoever rather than owning up to her mommy responsibilities and taking care of him herself. Also, as we all know at this point, her teenaged daughter is pregnant. If that was my daughter going through that, I would be right there for her, not traipsing around the country.
Even if I was a die hard Republican, I absolutely would NOT vote for McCain with that woman on the ticket. Especially with McCain being super old and having had recurring problems with cancer, I couldn't vote for a chance she would be in charge of the country. She needs to be dealing with the responsibilities she already has at home. |

Just for the record, I have breastfeed all of my children until 14 months of age when they have decided to wean themselves - and I would never call anyone a bad mother for choosing to do other wise. Just because she isn't living up to your standards of what a "good" mother is doesn't give you the right to call her a bad mother or person!!!! Besides, do you know for a fact that she isn't pumping her breastmilk for her baby?
Also, it seems to me that her husband has taken over a lot of the home/family responsibilities in order to support her career - I don't see people getting this upset when a woman becomes a dr (or lawyer -like Michelle Obama) & is working lots of hrs away from her family especially when her husband has stepped in to help fill her shoes at home.
I thought that as a society we had grown past the days when the woman had to be the one staying home taking care of the children. I am a SAHM, but if the tables were turned so that my husband would be able to stay @ home & raise our children while I furthered my career I would never think any less of my mothering skills or those of any other woman making the same decision. It seems as if some people aren't as much for equality for all as they preach to be!!!!! |

This is a very interesting discussion. I for one was extremely excited when McCain picked Palin to be his VP running mate. She is definitely my kind of woman, 100% pro-life, strong, independent, sticks by her convictions, but also kind and compassionate. I thought it was also extremely smart of McCain to pick someone that is truly from the people. She is the most average american politician I have seen in a long time. I think a lot of republicans are really excited to have her running with McCain, despite the outrage the mainstream media is making about this pick.
I also found the post very interesting that criticized her as a mother. I am a stay at home mom with soon to be 3 children under 2 years old ( I have twins & am due in 2 months with our 3rd). Despite the trials of being a stay at home mom, I feel it is truly where I am called to be, and couldn't realistically see myself anywhere else. That being said, I don't think all moms are called to be at home. Many women have very big careers, and I believe can be successful mothers also. I could ramble on more, but I think I have shared enough of my thoughts. :)
May the best man &/ or woman win! |

I'm not at ALL saying women should stay at home if they don't want to be there. I don't think there is anything wrong with working moms at all, as long as they are there for their family when the family needs them (and I think the same thing about fathers). I'm saying that she at least needs to be CLOSE to home for them. If she's on the campaign trail for the next couple months, I find it extremely doubtful she'll have her kids with her that whole time. Even if she did, that wouldn't be a very stable home environment for them, so I don't know that would be a good solution either. Realistically, how often is she going to even get to see her tiny baby if he's in Alaska and she's on the campaign trail? Is he even going to recognize her as his mother anymore? It seems to me she is abandoning her family for a time. |

And about McCain being so old....someone sent me this email:
How to Save Taxpayers $5 million
A president's pension currently is $191,300 per year.
Assuming the next president lives to age 80. Sen McCain would receive ZERO pension as he would reach 80 at the end of two terms as President. Sen Obama would be retired for 26 years after two terms and would Receive $4,973,800 in pension.
Therefore it would certainly make economic sense to elect McCain in November.
Chew on that.

Of course she had her family with her tonight, but watch how often they appear with her between now and November.
As for McCain turning 80 as president, not likely. Considering how much being president seems to age someone, I think chances of him living that long if elected are virtually nill. |

I read many of the replies under this post. I mostly wanted to see how many other moms were thinking like I was. I was actually shocked by many of them. I did not breast feed, simply because I have Fibromyalgia and it was virtually impossible. I tried and do think it's best. So on that I can't say much. I am a stay at home mommy. I do feel that if it is possible that you stay home or where you can be close to you children. So I agree with the moms that were passionately speaking out on that. I should warn.. I am not pro-life. I do believe in choice. I wish there wasn't a need for it.. but it is a choice. And an important one that most women do not take lightly. My primary concern with her is the fact that she has two young children. The youngest of which has Downs. She does not seem to be taking that into consideration. She had that baby on stage under the light, flashes, sounds... I feel sorry for him. Having said that.. I would feel the same way if his father were the one running and he and his wife were bringing him out. I also had a problem with her campaign complaining that she is being targeted unfairly due to her sex. Then she come out and implies that she's a pit bull with lipstick. Do they really want to pretend that it wouldn't be the same if she were a man (bringing up the 17 y/o pregnancy and dui) OR Are they saying that if they found a smudge in Oboma's personal history that they wouldn't be shoving it in the publics face every chance they got. An old phrase that bothered me for many years comes too mind.. If you can't stand the heat... get out of the kitchen. I'm just saying.... I would like to believe that politicians don't really think that we are as hypocritical and naive as they appear do they? I am not trying to stir the pot to much .. just throwing my 2 cents in...Have a beautiful day! |

I could be wrong, but from what I understand, she is still nursing her 4 month old. At least that was mentioned on the news. Some women are super-human and can multi-task 5 billion things at once. Also reported is that she fired her chef when she won as Gov. of Alska. She must have figured out some way to feed her kids and have family time. I, personally, would have kept the chef : ) |

Colleen - I will go right out and say it, and hope that I'm not bashed for this. Several years ago I had an abortion. I was taking precautions. I was on birth control and my Dr didn't tell me that antibiotics could lessen the affects. I was in a big city, no family near me, my boyfriend (now husband) and I had only been dating for a short time. I knew that I was in no position to bring a child into the world at the time. Scared is not the word... I was terrified!!!
It was not a decision that I took lightly!!! It's not like I saw the stick turn pink and said "Well... I'm NOT having a baby!" I sat many nights thinking about it. Crying. Trying to figure out what was best.
I would not wish that on anyone. It was scary, confusing, heartbreaking, and something that was even harder to deal with when we got pregnant and had our little angel. I felt guilty. But once I was able to look beyond my emotions, I know that what we did was the right thing. I would not be where I am today if I had followed through with that pregnancy. I truly believe that my relationship with my then boyfriend would have survived. We had plenty of obstacles on our life's path.
I am by no means saying that it is the right thing to do for every situation. BUT I do think that it's something that should be available. Maybe even through an office that you have several visits before that procedure" is done. Through an OB/GYN.
I hear Pro Life people and they often use the word "Right, Decision, or Choice" to explain why they had their baby. But they want to take that "Right, Decision, or Choice" away.
Then I see people (not necessarily pro life) who had a child before they were ready and the child is neglected, pawned off on others (who were not looking to raise a child but did because it was the right thing to do) or worse physically and emotionally abused.
I also think that it is naive to think that if we were to get rid of abortion.. that there would not be women and girls that are absolutely panicked and would do anything to not have a child. They would be willing to have a procedure done in the back of someone home, or do something to themselves that could cause mother or fetus death or harmed. As horrible as it sound their could be a lot more babies abandoned.. left to die or killed right after birth because they couldn't tell their parents.
I wish that this were a perfect world and that those were not likely possibilities. But I do think that it's important to consider what would happen to the babies that would have been born. Would they have everything that they needed? Would their parents be able to afford to feed them? (Essential in an economy like this..Our family has $100 to buy groceries fro 2 weeks! Many young people can't afford to keep their lights on... much less keep anything other than bread and peanut butter in their home.
I'm sure that my opinion is not going to be a popular one, but I was asked about my thought on the matter. Please... No nasty email required. |

I grew up with being pro-life I thought it was a horrible thing to even think about doing. I had a small change of heart when my best friend moved to a smaller town and she told me about a girl she met that was 15 and pregnant by her own father. She wanted to get an abortion so as not to live with this "shame" legally she was not old enough and wouldn't tell any family or teachers only a few people knew so she took a bunch of pills. She ended up in the hospital I am not sure if she actually lost the baby but she was not pregnant after she was out and she finally told her mother and her father went to jail. I believe if it is a result of rape specially your own family that an abortion would not be a bad thing.... I personally don't think I could do it but I guess it has to do with how you can handle it emotionally because you are the one that has to live with it. I was pregnant at 18 and the first thing my mother told me was that she would pay for the abortion because she didn't want to raise another kid. I told her where to stick it and told her it wasn't her responsability. My son is now 13 and I had a few struggles but his dad and I managed. He is currently with his dad (20 minutes from me) but I am about to go to court for him) I am re-married and now have a daughter that will be 1 this month and at times I wish I would have waited to have kids because with my son I had to go back to work full time (but still BF) and I didn't get the chance to focus on my carreer. I am blessed to be a SAHM and see all the milestones and little moments that you can't capture on film. If it is used as a birth control then that is horrible. (know people that have had 2-3) |

Let me say that I agree with Indigo Ottyr completely...oh, and then there's this...sent to me from a very bright gal I love to death...it's an email circulating, and from what I've looked into, it's true. Yikes. GO OBAMA!
Whether the writer is an Alaskan who knows her personally or not-the facts are still true. To you right wing Republicans who would rather die than bring in a Democrat (from whose ideas you are now benefiting), you should think carefully about having her as a potential president. If you want more of the past eight years and this country and the Supreme Court sent completely down to destruction-go ahead and sign the death warrant of the USA and vote for McCain/Palin.
As an Alaskan, I am writing to give all of you some information on Sarah Palin, Senator McCain's choice for VP. As an Alaska voter, I know more than most of you about her and, frankly, I am horrified that he picked her.
The most accurate description of her is red neck. Her husband works in the oil fields of Prudhoe Bay and races snow mobiles. She is a life time member of the NRA and has worked tirelessly to allow indiscriminate hunting of wildlife in Alaska, particularly wolves and bears. She has spent millions of Alaska state dollars on aerial hunting of these predators from helicopters and airplanes, dollars that should have been spent, for example, on Alaska's failing school system. We have the lowest rate of high school graduation in the country. Not all of you may think aerial predator hunting is so bad, but how anyone (other than Alaska wolf-haters, of which there are many, most without teeth), could think this use of funds is appropriate is beyond me. If you want to know more about the aerial hunting travesty, let me know and I will send some links to informative web sites.
She has been a strong supporter of increased use of fossil fuels, yet the McCain campaign has the nerve to say she has "green" policies. The only thing green about Sarah Palin is her lack of experience. She has consistently supported drilling in ANWR, use of coal-burning power plants (as I write this, a new coal plant is being built in her home town of Wasilla), strip mining, and almost anything else that will unnecessarily exploit the diminishing resources of Alaska and destroy its environment.
Prior to her one year as governor of Alaska, she was mayor of Wasilla, a small red neck town outside Anchorage. The average maximum education level of parents of junior high school kids in Wasilla is 10th grade. Unfortunately, I have to go to Wasilla every week to get groceries and other supplies, so I have continual contact with the people who put Palin in office in the first place. I know what I'm talking about. These people don't have a concept of the world around them or of the serious issues facing the US. Furthermore, they don't care. So long as they can go out and hunt their moose every fall, kill wolves and bears and drive their snow mobiles and ATVs through every corner of the wilderness, they're happy. I wish I were exaggerating.
Sarah Palin is currently involved in a political corruption scandal. She fired an individual in law enforcement here because she didn't like how he treated one of her relatives during a divorce. The man's performance and ability weren't considered; it was a totally personal firing and is currently under investigation. While the issue isn't close to the scandal of Ted Steven's corruption, it shows that Palin isn't "squeaky clean" and causes me to think there may be more issues that could come to light. Clearly McCain doesn't care.
When you line Palin up with Biden, the comparison would be laughable if it weren't so serious. Sarah Palin knows nothing of economics (admittedly a weak area for McCain), or of international affairs, knows nothing of national government, Social Security, unemployment, health care systems - you name it. The idea of her meeting with heads of foreign governments around the world truly frightens me. In an increasingly dangerous world, with the economy in shambles in the US, Sarah Palin is uniquely UNqualified to be vice president. John McCain is not a young man. Should something happen to him such that the vice president had to step in, it would destroy our country and possibly the world to have someone as inexperienced and inappropriate as Sarah Palin. The choice of Palin is a cheap shot by McCain to try to get Hillary supporters to vote for him. when McCain introduced her today, Palin had the nerve to compare herself with Hillary and Geraldine Ferraro. Sarah Palin, you are no Hillary Clinton.
To those of you who, like me, supported Hilary and were upset that she did not get the nomination, please don't think that Sarah Palin is a worthy substitute. If you supported Hillary, regardless of what you think the media and the democratic party may have done to undermine her campaign, the person to support now is Obama, not Sarah Palin. To those of you who are independent or undecided, don't let the choice of Palin sway you in favor of McCain. Choosing her shows how unqualified McCain is to be president. To those of you who are conservative, I guess you have no choice for president. But please try to see how the poor choice of Palin tells us a great deal about McCain's judgment. While the political posturing inherent in the choice of Palin is obvious, the more serious issue is the fact that the VP is, literally, a heartbeat away from the presid ency. Sarah Palin is totally and unequivocally unqualified to be vice president, let alone president.
I know this is a lengthy and emotional email, but the stakes are high. I thought it might help for all of you, regardless of political affiliation, to know something about Palin from someone who has to live with her administration in Alaska on a daily basis.

I laughed when I saw this post and harder when I started reading. It seems politics make people digress. It seems that people in the spotlight are always judged very harshly and those judging deem themselves to know whats "right" or "wrong" about what they are doing. Do you not think that Palin thought over her decision and discussed it with her family--honestly who would turn down Veep? I'm so sorry for the lady who went through the abortion because I know people who have gone through something similar and how much its affected them--although I am Pro-life that doesn't mean I don't respect the right to choice or realize how much abortions are going to go underground if Roe v Wade is overturned. We can't change what people believe and who they are. As for Sarah Palin and her family being called a red neck because they are from a certain town, ride snowmobiles/atvs, and hunt....sounds like someone is just far reaching. Gotta love politics. Oh and just because someone doesn't breastfeed and be with their child 24/7 doesn't make them a bad mom--I happened to do both those things, but there are plenty of people who choose to formula feed and plenty of people to love those kids as well as their parents. Maybe you should open your mind and reevaluate your view on the world. |

I don't know Palin enough to judge her as a person or a mother, however been a fan of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. He commented on the fact that her daughter had the choice to get an abortion or keep the baby, however she does not believe to leave the same kind of alternative to other.
There is a lot of hypocrisy in politics but when the government tries to regulate people most intimate choices and affect their freedom than I feel uncomfortable.
Maybe she should have promote sex education so her daughter would know how not to get pregnant! (Sorry I had to say it)

I believe abortion should only be used in the case of rape, incest, and risk of death to the mother. I don't believe it should be used as a form of birth control. With that said I can not and will not vote for McCain. Before Palin I felt he would have been an ok president, but now I can't vote for him because he chose her. She stands for things I don't believe in like her stand on abortion. If McCain died and Palin became president I am sure she would try to pass law that abortion should be banned. Think about it if the choice for abortion was not out there then there would be more news about babies being abandoned, mother's dying from abortions not being done properly, there is enough chaos in this country going on already that we don't need that on our hands as well. As a Independent I was really considering the pros and cons about each president hopeful before Palin came along and I was in a deadlock about who I should pick even slightly leaning toward McCain, but with Palin as VP pick the decision was chosen for me and I have to vote for Obama now. |

Hello All - I don't have time to read all the discussion, but I know I opened a big can of worms, I knew I would.. but thought I would take the chance. Ijust read the beginning of Salina's reply and I just wanted to say even though I am 100% against abortion, I have so much compassion for women today. I believe that we need to support each other instead of giving this easy way out that haunts many women. Support adoption, and many other ways... LIke I said I do not have time right now to read all the replies, but Salina, I just wanted to tell you and anyone else, that I do not judge anyone for making that choice. Pregnancy can be a very scary thing. I do know. Anyways....
Politics, always comes with lots of strong opinions. And I believe we can express our opinions and feel very strongly about the way we feel, but still at the end of the day not take anything personally.
No matter what our beliefs, I do believe we need to pray for our country and the upcoming election, that we will have "Our Creator's" blessing.

I do have to say, however, that even in rape cases there are so many parents who would love to adopt. Even though the baby was conceived out of an evil act, there are parents out there who would love and nurture that child. I had a friend who went through that, and she was so relieved when she decided not to abort and adopt the baby out to loving parents. |

The abortion issue is a false political issue. Not even the most radical Republican will overthrow Roe vs Wade, it is just a nice populist argument where you can rally the attention of everybody.
Be anti abortion is not going to avoid abortion, women who wants to get an abortion will anyway and it will come down to a question of money, if it is done safely or not.
In Europe when UK was one of the few country with legalized abortion, who had the money would go there, who didn't would use a hanger or something unsafe.
Palin's daughter who is pregnant had a choice to keep the baby or not, why would my daughter not be having the same choice?
I am not contesting her conviction, I just don't know why she would want to regulate something so personal...so much for government interfering in your business!!!!

And even those people that are religious or a believer may not believe that their god created that life. A lot of people believe that people created that life using the tools that their god originally gave them. |

Sorry if I offended anyone. But all of us vote based on our BELIEFS - whether or not they are religious. But we vote based on what we believe in. Do we believe in a women's right to choose? Yes or no...that is something we BELIEVE in. I choose to vote based on what I believe in. And my religion plays a big part in that. I'm sorry if you don't agree, but that is MY point of view. |

No one is disagreeing with people voting on your beliefs, but your "who are we" statement implied that all voters or citizens or whatever would be operating under the same premise, that an unplanned/unwanted pregnancy was created by God, and so we were just pointing out that not everyone IS operating under that premise. |

Well I don't want to get into a big "religious" discussion, but since we are talking about beliefs, since that is my belief, it would make since that I think we are all held accountable to God for our actions, so obviously I stated "we" because that is what I believe. |

I do agree with you on that Bonnie. No matter what we all believe we will one day need to be held accountable for our decisions and our actions, we just need to try to make the right choices til then. |

I agree with you Bonnie...my beliefs which stem majorly from my religious view points as a Christian sway my voting. I believe that fetus is a person from Conception....alot of people don't--mainly because they are uneducated. Why people believe it is ok to kill an innocent child i'm not sure....i've spoken several times about abortion and the process is gruesome and hurtful--so are the pictures. I'd like to see what the correlation is between people who support abortion and people who support capital punishment. Palin has a lot of good ideas--she also did away with some of the taxes in AK allowing the people to have more of their money....if the stories about her were research alot of them were shown to be misconstrued esp the one about her in-law...i would have fired him too. From an economic standpoint...many of her ideas paired with McCain's are going to be good. Many people don't believe in allowing jobs to go overseas....I believe they are not educated in how free trade and economics work. I wish our public was a lot more educated about decisions and business. That would cure alot of the economic crisis we are in...McCain is a lot less extreme in his views....and he is the Pres candidate not Veep. His views are more what I'm looking at. |

I agree that pregnancy is something very personal, but we are talking about the life of another person not just that woman's own body! Science has proven that life starts at the union of the egg & sperm, so regardless of whether or not you believe that life to have been created by God or people, it is still life. Doesn't it deserve the chance to fulfill the life it has been given? |

If you are not a vegan, you have no right to make that arguement. Cows and chickens are lives too. |

I am making the argument that life should be fulfilled. I believe that by providing food for my family, cows & chickens are fulfilling their life! How is a baby fulfilling it's life when it is aborted? It has not been given the chance to provide any service to any other living creature! |

Stem cell research and using the cells for cures. Now that is a service. I would never get an abortion, but I just had to throw out there that there is actually a use for aborted fetuses. |

Back to the original topic here, after seeing the Katie Couric interview, I would say she would HAVE to be a liability! The woman only replied in generalities, dodging the questions, and flat out nonsense. Seriously, where did McCain FIND her? |
