Dealing with a bipoar & ADHD child.
I am a SAHM with 4 kids. My 11 year old son is bipolar and has ADHD. We are on meds and counseling. Sometimes though I have a really hard time with him when trying to deal with him & his younger brother. They both are strong willed and are hard to discipline, and sometimes it seems nothing I do works. I love all my kids, but I feel that all I get done it deal with my 11 year old on a daily basis.
Any other moms out there have any suggestions?
Thanks
Marie

Do you have your 11yr old on a routine? My son is very strong-willed too. I would recommend getting "Raising the sprited child" Its a mothers bible. I write in a journal and belong to a raising a sprited child group. Remember to take time out for you!! Are you and your husband on the same page when it comes to disciplining your children?

He isn't on a strict routine, but I think that might be a good idea. He is a wonderful child when he wants to be, but annoys anyone when he has nothing " better" to do. Not that he doesn't have anything he could be doing, just nothing he wants to.
Yes, we are on the same page when we discipline him. It is a little more difficult with him, but we are figuring out what works still. It is a difficult age anyhow.
Thanks for listening!!

He could have( not a doctor what so ever) Oppositional defiant disorder. I got the book "The difucult child" "the explosive child" once I read it. I am like yep thats my son

He could still have it. He was diagnosed a few years agow tih it, but once he got the bipolar diagnoses with ADHD it wasn't mentioned again. I can always ask his counselor about it.
Now if I could just get my 4 year old to behave... lol.

I know how you feel. no matter what you read or look up online it is hard to comprehend. I still look up stuff and try to learn something new all the time.

Are you sure that he has both. BiPolar can look like ADHD. ADHD medications will make the behaviorof the BiPolar child worse. I would get a second opinion. Also the doses need to be adjusted as the child grows. My son is 12. He was treated for ADHD for 10 years. I got a second opinion form a provider that did not realluy know his history. He was admitted to the hospital. They took him off all of his medications so that they could really assess him. That is when he was diagnosed as BiPolar. The medications for BiPolar make all of the difference in the world. I was ready to put my son in a group home. Now he has his moments, but his behavior is much better now. I also think that sports is good for him. getting outside and running and kicking a ball help him burn off some of the energy. Take care. I hope this helps.
