Potty Training Son at 17 Months
Ok, so I know this sounds crazy, but we just started to potty train our son yesterday. He just turned 17 months on the 7th of August. Every time I would change a poopy diaper I would say "phew" and wave my hand to make him laugh. He started to imitate that when he would have a bowel movement. Then he started to do that BEFORE he would have a bowel movement. He then started to do that when he would pee and sometimes before he would pee. My mom said she potty trained us early, but some people think I am nuts. I have tried to make the whole potty chair a pleasant experience, but now I think he likes it too much and just wants to sit in it :) He has pretty regular bowel movements and hates to be wet, so he is in big boy underwear with a plastic liner over the top. Has anyone else potty trained young, and if so what worked best for you? I don't want him to end up seeing this as a negative experience, or setting him back somehow.

I don't think you are nuts. My daughter Meghan turned 22 months yesterday and she has been peeing on the potty since she was 16mths old. She really started herself, we can't take credit for it. Haven't been as successful with poop yet. Only 2 times on the potty. I also bought a lil potty for her but she only wanted to play with it. She goes on the regular toilet since the beginning. We also bought her a Dora seat for the regular potty but she won't use that either. I am so glad to find someone else who is potty training early!!! Keep in touch!!!!

Definitely! I will be sure to let you know how it goes! Did you use pull ups, or go straight to underwear?

I didn't start potty training as early as you guys did. My daughter is 2 1/2 and she just said one day about five weeks ago that she had to go pee pee. The rest is history!! She still wears a diaper at night though. I didn't use pull ups because I don't feel that they really know the difference between that and a diaper and if they have one on they will still go in it. A friend of mine had told me that. She said once her boys had on real underwear that they didn't like being messy so they just started using the potty. My daughter loves wearing her princess underwear and she has only had a couple of accidents. I don't think you sound crazy for starting early b/c your son sounds like he is ready to start. It may take a little longer b/c he is younger, but he sounds like he will do well with it.

Thanks Jamie! My son went pee 7 times today in the potty, so I am really hoping he takes to it. He does a lot of little pees though, so that is going to be a challenge. He also gives a lot of false signals (we have that little gesture for need to go potty) because I think he likes to sit on the potty and watch t.v. :) Men! Ha!

My son is only 10 mo old, so I have no advice, but I just wanted to say thanks for the hope. Every one has told me that boys are harder to train, and that it takes them for ever. I know it depends on the child, but I was thinking like 2 yr. or so. But I have hope now. lol. I would really like to know how this works out for you and your son. Good luck.

We use pullups when we are out visiting family.

Hi Tina,
I started potty training my daughter when she was 14 1/2 months old and she got the poppy part down first we went for 2 wks without changing a dirty diaper. We did have a little set back and have had to sart over, but we are getting there again.
The trick for us was that she hated sitting on her little chair we had to put a seat on the big potty and that was it she likes to sit on the potty and sing the ABC song so she knows how long she has to sit there.
Good luck and remeber somtimes boys take longer than girls, it just depends on the kid.

Hi Anne! That is awesome that you started at 14 1/2 months! I like to hear potty success stories, because it seems everyone else I am running into only likes to share their horror stories! :) Congrats on the success! I will keep posting my progress with Dagen, but I have heard boys are more difficult, so keep your fingers crossed for us! :)
